A Burroughs High School science teacher who became one of seven semifinalists in the running to be named a 2014 California Teacher of the Year did not advance in the state competition, according to a press release issued by State Supt. Tom Torlakson this week.
In October, Jill Tobin was selected from among 75,000 eligible educators as one of Los Angeles County’s 16 Teachers of the Year.
She then became one of seven semifinalists for the state recognition among educators from Orange, Riverside, Contra Costa and San Bernardino counties.
“Although I will not be named a state of California [Teacher of the Year], I am still incredibly proud of how far I’ve gone and what I have been able to achieve,” Tobin said in an email.
The five California Teachers of the Year include educators from Palm Springs, Orange, Manhattan Beach, Vallejo City and Elk Grove unified school districts.
As a Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year, Tobin will continue to represent Burbank Unified throughout the school year and write a blog through the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s “Teacher 2 Teacher” website, which will serve as a resource for fellow educators.
