DeBell Golf Club to open eatery

Golfers can expect a new restaurant menu and synergy between golf and food operations at DeBell Golf Club next week with the Canyon Grille, the club’s new eatery, slated to open for breakfast and lunch on Friday.

Tom Shayman, 17-year owner and operator of the Burbank Bar and Grille on North San Fernando Road, has taken the helm of the club’s restaurant.

“We want to make everybody feel warm and welcome here,” Shayman said Friday. “We’re really going to be invested in the golf operation.”

Customers will be able to enjoy a whole new menu, which Shayman described as “California continental,” with comfort dishes such as macaroni and cheese, burgers and flatbread pizzas, along with ahi tuna and salmon entrées.

“I’ve always been impressed with his operation at the Burbank Bar and Grille,” said club director Scott Scozzola of Shayman. “We have the shared common vision for both the golf (operation) and the restaurant to synergize together…I know he’s very competent and capable in what he does based on his current operation.”

Patrons can expect streamlined operations — golfers will be able to book restaurant reservations from the golf shop, and golf tee times from the restaurant, Shayman said. Additionally, DeBell gift cards can be used anywhere in the club, including the restaurant.

“It will look like one seamless operation,” Shayman said, adding that the restaurant staff will include a blend of existing and new employees.

Scozzola, owner of S.S. Golf Inc., took over day-to-day club operations from the city on Wednesday. That includes managing the golf course and restaurant operations, negotiating all maintenance and service contracts, developing a long-term capital improvement program and purchasing license and insurance for the facility.

The restaurant will open for breakfast and lunch on Friday, and will begin also serving dinner on Valentine’s Day. A grand re-opening is slated for April.
