KCET captures three Golden Mike awards

An independent television station headquartered in Burbank and a local government TV producer/manager brought home Golden Mike awards on Saturday from the Radio & Television News Assn. of Southern California.

KCETLink, which has 100 employees at its Burbank offices, garnered three Golden Mike awards on Saturday for its “SoCal Connected” nightly news program, including best hard news, best government and political reporting and best medical and science reporting.

The station earned its Golden Mike for best hard news reporting for a broadcast called “Five Little Kings,” which examined the considerable power wielded by Los Angeles County’s five county supervisors.

The station received its honor for best government and political reporting for a story called “Compton: Corruption, Incompetence or Just Business as Usual?,” which unveiled accusations of street politics and scandal with some Compton City Council members making the equivalent of $1,500 per hour.

KCET earned its Golden Mike for best medical and science reporting for a segment called “Head Games,” which examined whether college or high school football players were put at risk when younger players try to emulate professional football players on the gridiron.

This year’s Golden Mikes ceremony was bittersweet for Karen Foshay, producer of “Five Little Kings,” because “SoCal Connected” is out of production until funding is secured for another season.

“This was our farewell tour at the awards ceremony. But it’s a wonderful recognition,” Foshay said on Monday. “It’s always nice to be recognized by your fellow journalists. I’m so excited to have these stories recognized. That kind of quality journalism doesn’t exist anywhere else. I want to stress it is a team effort. Editors, producers, reporters, photographers and associate producers all help put a story together.”

In addition to KCET, Peter Musurlian, station manager and senior producer of the Burbank Channel, picked up two Golden Mikes for his reporting on “Burbank On Demand,” a magazine-style show that features city of Burbank services and stories.

Musurlian won for best videography of a hard news story for a piece on Burbank Water and Power’s line-climbing competitors at the annual Lineman’s Rodeo.

He also won for best television business and consumer reporting for a broadcast examining the economy of downtown Burbank called “Organic Business Growth.”
