Woman files claim against Burbank, LAPD

A woman who was allegedly assaulted during a reported carjacking attempt in Burbank last year has filed a claim against the city of Burbank and the Los Angeles Police Department, citing that the inaction of police officers led to her injuries.

Glendale resident Takui Erdoglian, who works in Burbank, was allegedly assaulted on Sept. 25, 2013, at the intersection of Orange Grove and Lake Street while Burbank and Los Angeles police officers were “either watching or being dispatched,” according to the claim filed by law firm Geragos & Geragos.

“She was injured due to the negligence of the police,” said her attorney, Hagop Kuyumjian, adding he didn’t know how many suspects were involved in the incident.

Erdoglian is seeking undisclosed damages, according to the claim, which was filed last month.

Kuyumjian said he could not go into further detail about what led to the alleged attempted carjacking, and the LAPD did not provide a copy of the police report by Tuesday afternoon.

LAPD officials also wouldn’t comment on the claim nor what their officers were doing in Burbank.

However, Sgt. Darin Ryburn of the Burbank Police Department said the matter was an LAPD case and it involved officers from the North Hollywood Community Police Station. Burbank did not file a police report, he said.

“(Burbank’s) patrol officers assisted LAPD with the detention and transportation of the suspects, but that is all,” Ryburn said in an email.

But Capt. Peter Whittingham, with the North Hollywood police station, said his site doesn’t have the resources to conduct an investigation in Burbank and it was likely the LAPD’s Commercial Crimes Unit.

Burbank City Atty. Amy Albano would not comment on the claim, which would be deemed denied if the city doesn’t respond to Geragos & Geragos within 45 days.
