District reports fewer students

Burbank school officials reported this week that about 100 fewer students are currently in the district compared to this time last year.

There are currently 15,191 students enrolled in Burbank schools this spring, 94 fewer students than in 2013.

Of the total, 1,046 have received interdistrict permits, meaning they live beyond Burbank’s boundaries, but their parents own a Burbank business or they are employed within the school district’s boundaries.

The school district also grants permits to release students who live in Burbank to attend other school districts.

There are currently 222 students who live in Burbank but attend another district. Sixty of those received releases from the district for the first time this academic year.

Hani Youssef, director of safety and student services, said many of the roughly 200 students enrolled outside of Burbank left the district to attend dual-language immersion programs, which are offered in the Glendale, Los Angeles and Pasadena districts.

“But now that we’re building our dual-immersion program, we’re expecting to keep some of those students — maybe get some of them back down the line,” Youssef said.
