Burbank Unified reports more graduating students than average
Burbank Unified students are graduating at a rate well above the state average, according to data released this week.
For the students who were part of the class of 2012-13, more than 91.8% of them graduated, while nearly 70 students dropped out.
The district’s graduation rate is slightly lower than the 93% graduation rate reported for its classes of 2010, 2011 and 2012.
But it still comes in well above the state average of 80%, and Burbank’s 2012-13 rate tally is almost 2% higher than Glendale Unified’s 90% graduation rate.
In a separate comparison, Los Angeles Unified reported a graduation rate of 67.9%.
The most recent figures were made available after officials tracked students who began high school in 2009-10 on the path to graduate in 2013.
At Burbank High, 94% of the 687 students in the class of 2013 graduated, while 95% of Burroughs’ 2013 class of 596 students received their diplomas.
Of the various sub-groups at the two high schools, about 35 students who dropped out were of Latino descent, while 26 dropouts were Caucasian.
Across the state, officials found graduation rates among Latino and black students increased, but remained lower overall compared to other sub-groups.
Still, State Supt. Tom Torlakson expressed optimism in a statement about higher overall graduation rates reported this year — the fourth straight climb seen in four years.
“For the first time in our state’s history, more than 80% of our students are graduating — a clear sign of their hard work and the support they receive from their teachers, families and communities,” Torlakson said.
