On the Town: La Providencia Guild bops to the oldies

From the classic cars provided by the Road Kings of Burbank to the evening’s malt-shop motif, members of the La Providencia Guild of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles threw it back to the 1950s as they presented their annual spring social fundraiser under the theme of “Rock Around the Clock” in the Starlight Room of the Castaway restaurant this past Sunday evening.

Promoting her presidential theme — “Helping Hands, Willing Hearts, Giving Hope” — Veronica Chavoor, guild president, welcomed the assemblage who were decked out in school sweaters, letterman jackets, cheerleader outfits, poodle skirts and other sartorial selections reminiscent of the proms and sock hops of the Eisenhower era.

“Our guild has unique opportunities to work together in a variety of ways to benefit children in need of medical attention,” said Chavoor, who is presiding over the organization’s current project of raising funds for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ rehabilitation medicine and sarcoma program.

Last week’s fundraiser, chaired by “Prom Queen” Lynn White-Shelby, included a dance performance titled “Memories Are Made of This” by Michelle Bouse and Randy Acarria and teeny boppers Rosio Iniguez, Margo Akopov and Stephanie Reyes of the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley.

Among those who made the evening a success were guild officers Joan Chandler, Deborah Spang, Lorelei Kelley, Dorothy Austin and Nancy Johnson as well as committee members Sue Ann Gordon, Phyllis Forsch, Sandra Kelley, Peg Setti, Marje Simay, Sophia MacIssac, Viki Margolin, Janet Jack, Lina Hariz, Nada Kaidbey, Richard and Rosemarie Witten, Connie Lawless, Pat Maskell, Dee Dee Rowlands and Alicia Katz.

Special guests in attendance who enjoyed the evening included City Councilman Bob Frutos and his wife, Laura, Tina Kalayjian of Children’s Hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery program, Barbara Howell, executive director at Burbank Temporary Aid Center, and Shanna Warren, who serves as the executive director of the local Boys & Girls Club.

The La Providencia Guild of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles was chartered in 1947 to foster interest in the work of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and to assist in the pediatric facility’s fundraising efforts.

Guild members help meet their financial project goals by volunteering at the organization’s thrift shop, located 3301 Burbank Blvd., and by organizing fundraising events.
