Letter: There’s no reason to water parkway turf

A man waters his lawn with a hose as the sprinklers also water the grass on the 1400 block of Allen Ave. north of Bel Aire Dr. in Glendale on Thursday, April 10, 2014. California is in the midst of a drought.

Considering we are in the worst drought, why continue to keep the small strip of grass between the sidewalk and curb?

As I drive around Burbank I see homeowners installing sprinkler systems and grass in the parkway turf. This insignificant strip of grass serves no purpose, does not add to property value and does nothing to enhance the beauty of a home garden. I feel it is irresponsible for homeowners to continue to maintain grass in this area. It should be replaced with any the following: drought tolerant plants, gravel/stone, flagstone, etc. all of which add more detail, dimension and character to a home and to the neighborhood.

Burbank should support the removal of the “parkway turf” to save probably millions of gallons of water annually. We have all seen the water runoff from sprinklers trying to water this grass area, most of it goes on the sidewalk and into the street. For the many that have already replaced the parkway turf, from what I have seen around Burbank it is always a significant improvement from the boring grass. Please, Burbank homeowners, take some responsibility and contribute to water-saving measures by replacing the parkway turf, not adding to the unnecessary water waste. Be part of the solution.
