Leader Sports Roundup: Providence girls’ basketball rolls to rout in tourney opener

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Providence 62, Buckley 6: The Pioneers rolled to a win Tuesday to open their own Providence Pioneer Shootout at Providence.

Providence (3-3) jumped out to a 32-point lead in the opening quarter and shut out Buckley in the first and third quarters.

Sophie Nazarian, Audrey Sayoc, Haley Laca, Sydney Sayoc (five steals) and Ava Tibbs scored eight points each for the Pioneers.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Burbank 52, Flintridge Prep 48 (overtime): The Bulldogs had to fight to gain the win Monday in the opening game of their own Burbank Tournament.

It was the first win of the season for Burbank (1-3) under first-year coach Sid Cooke.

Providence 66, Loyola 63: The Pioneers held on for the victory Monday in the opening round of the Rose City Roundball Classic at Maranatha High.

Jordan Shelley had 15 points, Bryce Whitaker had 13 points and nine assists, Michael Joanou had 13 points, Collin Ferrell contributed 11 points and A’Jahni Levias added 11 points for Providence (6-0).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Burroughs 43, Murietta Mesa 41: The Indians won the third quarter, 13-9, to pull out the victory Tuesday in a Brentwood Winter Invitational game.

Burroughs improved to 3-2.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Immaculate Heart 1, Burroughs 0: Missing four starting players, the Indians lost the nonleague match Monday at Glendale Community College.

Mayfield 15, Providence 0: The Pioneers dropped their Prep League opener Tuesday against the Cubs at the Glendale Sports Complex.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 5, Oakwood 0: The Indians opened their season Monday with a victory in the first round of the Ralph Brandt Tournament at Memorial Field.

Burroughs received two goals from Manny Gonzalez and one each from Elijah DuMonde, Carlos Rosales and Elias Galaviz.

La Cañada 3, Burbank 0: The Bulldogs opened their season Tuesday with a nonleague loss at home.

Providence 2, Milken Community 2: The host Pioneers played to a nonleague draw Tuesday at the Glendale Sports Complex.
