Leader Sports Roundup: Burbank, Burroughs girls’ soccer open league with shutouts

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Burbank 7, Muir 0: Maddie Chase and Roxy Payind scored two goals each for the Bulldogs in the Pacific League opener Tuesday on the road.

Liliana Partida, Katie Mallory and Ani Akopyan had goals for Burbank.

Burroughs 6, Glendale 0: Lauryn Bailey had two goals and two assists for the Indians to lead the way in the Pacific League opener Tuesday on the road.

Burroughs, which scored all of its goals in the second half, also received two goals from Stephanie Torres and one goal each from Lily Gonzalez and Athena Vournas. Jesse Virtue (two assists) paced the Indians defense.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Glendale 61, Burroughs 52: The Indians opened Pacific League play Tuesday with a loss at home.

Burroughs slips to 5-1.

Burroughs 62, Arleta 47: The Indians rolled to a victory Saturday in the championship of their own Burroughs Winter Tournament.

Burroughs went 4-0 in the tournament.

Muir 62, Burbank 53: It was a tough start of Pacific League play for the Bulldogs, who lost at home Tuesday.

Burbank slipped to 1-6.

Providence 50, Covina 45: The Pioneers came on in the fourth quarter to secure the nonleague victory Tuesday at home.

Providence improves to 7-3.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burbank 4, Muir 1: The Bulldogs stormed out of the gate to open Pacific League play Tuesday, earning a win at home.

Providence 8, Village Christian 2: The Pioneers rolled to a nonleague victory Tuesday on the road.

Jeremy Sun scored four goals for Providence.

Burroughs 3, Glendale 0: Manny Gonzalez had two goals and Elias Galaviz scored one to pace the Indians to a win Tuesday in their Pacific League opener at Memorial Field.

Goalkeepers Jacob Cardenas and Hyatt Entz combined for the shutout.

Royal 4, Burroughs 0: The Indians ended play in the Ralph Brandt Tournament on Saturday with a loss in the consolation round at Memorial Field.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Glendale 47, Burroughs 46: The Indians couldn’t pull out the win in their Pacific League opener Tuesday on the road.

Kayla Wrobel had13 points and five rebounds, Faith Boulanger had 10 points and five rebounds and Noor Fahs chopped in with six points and five rebounds for the Indians (4-3).

Burbank 43, Muir 35: The Bulldogs improved to 5-4 overall with the win Tuesday at home to open Pacific League play.

Brianna Castro scored 11 points for Burbank, while Tabitha Cruz and Karen Casillas contributed eight points each and Khyka Lipscomb added seven points.

Inglewood 48, Providence 43: Audrey Sayoc had 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals for the host Pioneers on Tuesday in a nonleague loss.

Ava Tibbs added eight points and five rebounds and Natalie Haroutounian and Sydney Sayoc added seven points each for Providence (5-4).
