Middle school athletes shine at annual track meet

Although the temperature was in the 90s Saturday, a collection of young athletes braved the heat to take part in an annual tradition.

Local athletes also found themselves in the heat of competition at the annual Burbank All-City Middle Schools Track and Field Meet. Nearly 300 athletes from the three local middle schools — Jordan, John Muir and Luther — took to the track and infield at Memorial Field for the friendly event.

The overall winner was Muir with 506.5 points. It was followed by Luther (399.5 ) and Jordan (328).

It was a record-breaking event, as 11 marks were broken or tied during the day of competition.

One of the most successful athletes of the meet was Lakely Nealis of Luther, who took first in three individual events in the girls’ eighth-grade division and helped her school’s 4x400-meter relay team notch a victory.

Started in the 1950s, the meet has been going strong for almost 15 years after not being run for 15 years in the 1980s and 90s. The event was revived in 2001 and looks to be going strong.
