Burroughs High grad Emily Tubert named All-American for second straight year

Burroughs graduate wins second-straight honor at Arkansas: Former Burroughs High standout Emily Tubert surely didn’t endure a sophomore slump this season playing for the University of Arkansas women’s golf team.
For the second straight year, Tubert has been named a first-team All-American. In addition, she was also selected to the National Golf Coaches Assn. All-Central Region Team for the second consecutive year.
Tubert and the Razorbacks wrapped up the season Friday at the NCAA Championship in Franklin, Tenn. Her award was announced Friday evening. Tubert was also a first-team All-American as a freshman last year. This year’s honor is the ninth All-American selection in the history of the Arkansas program. Tubert also earned her second SEC first-team honor this year.
Tubert was also selected to the College of Sports Information Director’s of America Capital One Academic All-District Six At-Large team earlier last week. She has a 3.80 grade-point average in broadcast journalism and now moves to the national ballot.
Tubert also excelled this season on the course. Tubert opened the year with ties for 16th and 15th place, respectively, and then shot closer to the top of the leaderboard, tying for seventh at the Mercedes-Benz Southeastern Conference/Pacific 12 Conference Challenge. Tubert shot back-to-back 217s and played three of the four fall events at six-over for nine rounds.
Tubert missed the final fall event representing Team USA and helping the squad win a gold medal at The Spirit International in Trinity, Texas. She returned to the Razorback lineup, shooting her way to a second-place finish with a one-under 215 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic kicking off the spring. Tubert picked up a tie for fourth and a tie for third at the SunTrust Invitational and the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, respectively. She posted a season-best 210 (72-70-68) at the SunTrust and shot a five-under 211 (72-70-69) at the Liz Murphey event.
Tubert rallied big in the final round of the NCAA Central Regional Championship, shooting a five-under with a pair of eagles in the first nine holes. Her 68 on day three was crucial for the Razorbacks as they moved on after a one-stroke edge over the No. 9 team.
In the 2012 NCAA Championship, Arkansas, ranked No. 34 by Golfstat.com, finished 23rd, shooting a four-day 1,214 with rounds of 303-301-209-301 at Vanderbilt University’s Legends Course just outside of Nashville. The Razorbacks were paced by Tubert, who finished eight-over with a 296. Tubert shot 73-74-77-72 over the four days.
Tubert — who also helped Arkansas finish second in the SEC Tournament — was also selected as a member of the USA’s Curtis Cup Team, becoming the third Razorback women’s golfer to earn a spot on the squad.
Hannah earns awards in ice hockey: Burbank native Bobby Hannah finished a successful junior season with the Division III Hobart College men’s ice hockey team.
Hannah, a junior forward, was named to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference West All-Tournament team as well as earning a spot on the ECAC West All-Academic Team for the second year in a row. In addition, Hannah, along with teammate Frank Salituro, won the team’s D. Michael Hazelton ’85 Memorial Award, given to the most improved players.
Hannah played in 26 games this season, scoring seven goals and adding four assists
The Statesmen posted a 16-10-1 overall record and won the ECAC West Championship for the second time in program history. Hobart finished the year ranked No. 9 in the D3hockey.com poll and No. 8 in the NCAA East Region Ranking. It was the Statesmen’s 10th consecutive winning season.
The Statesmen downed Neumann, 5-0, in the ECAC West Tournament championship game.
Former Burbank High athletes honored for academics at PCC: Burbank High graduates Gor Kirakosyan and Courtney Jensen have been singled out for their academic excellence at Pasadena City College this past season.
The men’s highest grade-point average award (sophomores with at least 48 units completed) was won by Kirakosyan, who had a 3.56 GPA. An All-South Coast Conference first-team honoree, he is headed to the UC Irvine. Of sophomore student-athletes, the Lancers men’s soccer team had the three highest GPAs in the college.
Jensen, a sophomore distance swimmer for the Lancers women’s team, won the women’s high GPA award with a 3.48 mark. Jensen twice was a California Community College Athletic Assn. state meet qualifier and she swam her all-time best in the marathon 1,650-yard freestyle to finish 12th. She was third at the conference championships in the event.
