Burbank High ready to induct latest Hall of Fame class

Since it inducted its first class in 2008, the Burbank High Athletic Hall of Fame has had a long and illustrious group of former athletes, coaches, teams and administrators to choose from.

“At Burbank High we have an advantage that many schools don’t have given the fact that we’ve been around for more than 100 years,” said Hall of Fame organizer Fred Cook, who is also the school’s athletic director. “We have been lucky to have some very good athletes come through Burbank High over the years.”

In the first three classes, the school inducted its share of outstanding individuals that included Olympic gold medal winners, world record holders, national champions, NCAA champions, Major League Baseball All-Stars, a National League batting champion and collegiate All-Americans, to name a few.

The school is poised to induct its fourth Hall of Fame class next month.

“This is a great class we’re inducting,” Cook said. “Among the group we have six CIF champions, two high school All-Americans who were three-time All-Americans, we have a three-time CIF state contestant, coaches who have won over 20 league championships and one CIF championship … and five of the athletes went on to play at PAC-12 schools.

“And there are great athletes that we still haven’t put in that we will be inducting in the next one. I have a long list of people that we can still choose from and a lot of them have done great things. We have CIF champion individuals and a team that we have yet to put in.”

A group of 14 former Bulldogs standouts will take their places in the hall in a ceremony on Sept. 27 in the school’s auditorium. There will be a meet-and-greet at 3 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 4.

“We like to make it a real special event,” said Cook, who adds to the Hall of Fame every two years.

This year’s list of honorees will be:

JERRY OGBORN

Coach and administrator who coached basketball, football and track and field. His 1926 Bulldogs football team advanced to the CIF semifinals and his teams won league championships in all three sports.

DICK MINASIAN

Longtime baseball coach and athletic director. Also coached lower level sports along with varsity. He coached more All-CIF players than any coach in school history.

HAM LLOYD

Longtime coach and administrator who instituted the first code of ethics for sports at Burbank. He coached football for seven seasons.

FRANK ZELINSKI

Was a boys’ golf coach and teacher who had 18 winning seasons in a row for the Bulldogs. He also had three undefeated seasons in a row and coached six All-CIF players.

BRAD ATWOOD

He earned nine letters in five sports (track and field, basketball, baseball, golf and football). Went on to run track at UCLA.

KENTON CORWIN

Was a CIF champion in 1940 (the school’s first individual champion) in the pole vault and placed third in the CIF State Meet. He was the Foothill League champion and had the second highest mark in the state that year.

RAY LOVE

Won the CIF Southern Section singles championship in boys’ tennis in 1947. He was a three-time Foothill League singles champion.

BOB WARD

Was all-league in football and track and field, winning a league title in football as well as being a sprint champion in track. Went on to coach many Olympic throwers and was the strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

BOB BRINKWORTH

Participated in football and track and field. Still among the top 10 in many football categories and currently holds two school records in track. Went on to run track at Cal Berkeley.

CHUCK MILAM

Was a three-time CIF champion and three-time All American in swimming. He went on to USC where he was an All-American and member of NCAA championship teams.

TIM DUBOIS

Was an all-league honoree in three sports (football, basketball and baseball) and a two-sport All-CIF Southern Section award-winner.

ANDREA KRIVA

Was a standout track and field athlete who still holds three Burbank school records in throwing events. She was a three-time CIF State Meet participant in the discus. Placed fifth in state in the discus in 1982. Went on to UCLA where she was an All-American tennis player.

DYSON HAMNER

Earned letters in track and field, football and basketball and was an all-league honoree in the three sports. Was a CIF champion in the high jump and went on to jump at San Diego State. Still holds the Bulldogs’ high jump record.

CAROLINE CAST

Was a three-time All-American who won seven Foothill League titles in swimming. She still holds three Burbank school records. Went on to swim at Arizona State where she was a PAC-10 champion and All-American.

BOB SMALLENBURG

Honored with the Distinguished Service Award. He played football and baseball at Burbank and coached five sports. He also helps fund sports and academic scholarships at the school.
