Sports Briefs: Burroughs youth volleyball camp nears

Real camp to begin anew in July

Boys’ and girls’ volleyball players 8-14 can hone their skills and learn about the sport at a Real’s Youth Volleyball Camps.

Under the direction of Burroughs High girls’ volleyball Coach Edwin Real, the camps will be held at the school’s gym. The sessions are: general skills camp (9 a.m.-noon July 17-20); general skills camp (noon-3 p.m. Aug. 7-10)

The cost is $130 for the general skills camps and $100 for the other camps. There is also a discount for multiple camps.

The fee includes a camp T-shirt, knee pads and a water bottle.

Participants will learn fundamentals, including passing, spiking and serving. In addition, offensive and defensive formations will be taught, including serve reception, blocking and digging.

Real has more than 25 years of coaching experience. Also at the camp will be Burroughs boys’ Coach Joel Brinton, who has almost 20 years of playing and coaching experience, along with former Indians’ All-CIF and all-league standouts and collegiate players Robbie Rutecki, Katie Rutecki, Caitlin Cottrell and Dani Gonzalez.

Tubert misses cut in LPGA event

Burroughs High graduate and LPGA rookie Emily Tubert failed to make the cut for the first time in three tournaments in her first season on the tour.

Tubert wasn’t able to move on to the championship round at the Shoprite LPGA Classic, which concluded Sunday at Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf Club in Galloway, NJ.

Tubert, who had to drop out of a tournament the previous week because of a shoulder injury, fired a 77 in the opening round Friday and a 73 Saturday for an eight-over-par 150.

The tournament winner was In-Kyunk Kim of Korea, who shot rounds of 66, 67 and 69 to finish with an 11-under 202 to earn the $225,000 first prize.

Low-cost tennis camp

Burroughs High boys’ and girls’ tennis coach Roy Bernhardt will be holding a low-cost tennis camp at the school’s courts.

The National Junior Tennis Learning program is from 8-9 a.m. and begins June 26, running Mondays through Thursdays. The cost is $10 for 24 hours of lessons. Students get a free T-shirt, a racket (if they need it) and a certificate of completion.

Bernhardt also runs a summer clinic which will be held at 9-11 a.m. June 26-Aug. 4, also at Burroughs. The cost is $200 for six weeks and the clinic includes drills, games and personal instruction.

Burbank Bulldog baseball camps

Baseball players can hone their skills and receive instruction in all facets of the sport at the Junior Bulldogs Camps.

The first sessions will be for players 6-10 and take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 17-21 and the other sessions are for players 11-14 and will take place at the same time June 12-16 and July 10-14.

The camps will be held at Burbank High under of the direction of longtime coach Bob Hart.

Sign-ups can be made at BurbankHighBaseball.org or on site the first day of the camp. Space is limited.

Tribe Youth Basketball Camps

Under the direction of Burroughs High girls’ basketball coach Vicky Oganyan and boys’ coach Allan Ellis, boys and girls ages 6-14 can take part in the seventh annual Tribe Youth Basketball Camps at Burroughs High.

There will be the last of three sessions that will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 10-12. The cost is $155.

At the camp, players will learn fundamentals, including shooting, passing, rebounding, ball handling, defense, footwork and team play, as well as take part in games. Campers will receive a T-shirt, will get a chance to win prizes and take part in a pizza party on the last day.

Campers may arrive early each morning for individual attention workouts starting at 8:45 a.m. Campers may bring a snack lunch each day or can purchase food and drinks at the snack bar.

Parents are invited to attend camp and are welcome to come to the awards ceremony held on the last day of camp. The final day will conclude with a variety of competitions that allows campers to showcase their skills, including shooting, dribbling and a one-on-one contest.
