Bits and pieces from the local sports scene: Burroughs looks good in passing tournament: The Burroughs High football team had some fine results Friday and Saturday in the Bonita passing tournament in La Verne.
The Indians went 3-2 Friday to finish third in their bracket of the 32-team tournament. In the playoffs Saturday, Burroughs won its first game before losing in a second game, ending its tourney involvement.
Quarterback Lucas Yanez threw 28 touchdown passes in the event, many to receiver Zander Anding. Burroughs’ Danny Ayala was named the defensive player of the tournament.
On the first day of play, Burroughs defeated Jurupa Valley, 38-12, before falling to Hart, 30-28, when the locals threw an interception at the 1-yard line. What followed was a 26-24 loss to Rancho Cucamonga — which won on the final play of the game — and victories against Santa Fe, 14-12, and Walnut, 26-22.
In the playoffs Saturday, Burroughs began with a 26-18 win against Silverado. However, they Indians then fell to host Bonita, 36-18.
Indians continue to thrive: The Burroughs High girls’ basketball team enjoyed another productive stretch last week, going 8-1 in summer-league play.
In the Saugus Tournament, the Indians (23-10) defeated Buena, 40-30, Camarillo, 41-36, and Marymount, 36-19.
Lisha Elsenbach had 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals against the Centurions and had 15 points and nine rebounds against Camarillo. Nicole Williams had eight points and four rebounds against Marymount.
Justice Shank had eight points and Chelsea Rhamdeow added six points and six rebounds in a 29-22 victory against Santa Monica and Rhamdeow had collected 11 points and four steals in downing Oxnard, 42-20
The only loss of the eek came against St. Bernard, as the Indians fell, 41-40. Elsenbach had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, Rhamdeow had 11 points and Aysia Shellmire added seven rebounds.
Burroughs was down, 27-12, at halftime and battled back, just falling short of the comeback.
In the Burbank League, Burroughs beat La Salle, 38-30, as Shank had 9 points and six rebounds.
In the Valencia League, the Indians again bested Oxnard, 32-23, as Elsenbach had 12 points.
In its own Burroughs League, the Indians defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 35-29. Elsenbach and Rhamdeow had eight points each and Shellmire had nine rebounds.
Burbank Connie Mack team gets two wins: The Burbank High Connie Mack baseball team notched a pair of wins last week.
In a game June 22, the Bulldogs defeated La Canada, 6-0.
Starting pitch Daniel Starkand threw four perfect innings. John White and Andrew Hernandez finished up on the hill and limited the Spartans to just one hit.
On offense, Hernandez led the way with two doubles and a run batted in. JT Sorrentino, James Johnson (two hits) and Starkand (two hits) also doubled and CC Okimoto and White also collected hits.
Burbank (5-1) received a forfeit win Thursday.
