BELL-JEFF VS. ST. GENEVIEVE

WHEN: 7 p.m. today.

WHERE: Sun Valley Poly High.

RECORDS: The Guards are 2-5, 0-1 in league; the Valiants are 4-3, 0-1.

LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to St. Anthony, 28-6; St. Genevieve lost to Salesian, 17-0.

OUTLOOK: With just three more Santa Fe League games remaining, Bell-Jeff can’t afford to suffer a loss against the Valiants if it hopes to keep its postseason aspirations alive. The Guards limp into the game after suffering three straight losses. The locals have had their problems on defense, as opposing squads have had little problem moving the ball against the Guards in recent weeks. One positive coming in for Bell-Jeff is that St. Genevieve is second-to-last in points scored in league, as it averages 22.4 a contest. Unfortunately for Bell-Jeff, it is last in the league in points scored, averaging 19.4. One of the highlights for the Bell-Jeff offense has been the play of senior Macah Shirley. Shirley, who has played running back, wide receiver and quarterback — along with defensive back — has scored 12 total touchdowns. Along with 62 carries for 743 yards on the ground, Shirley also has 20 catches for 358 yards. He is also the team’s leading tackler.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Two of St. Genevieve’s victories have come by one point, and by the same score (21-20 over Flintridge Prep and 21-20 over Marshall Fundamental.
