BURBANK — It had been 30 years since the last time the Burroughs High boys’ cross-country team qualified for the CIF Southern Section finals.

However, led by junior Anthony Monroy, the Indians were able to break that streak with a fine effort Saturday in the CIF preliminaries at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

Along with the Burroughs team qualifying for the finals next Saturday at the same venue, Burbank senior McKenzie Paul also made the cut as an individual.

The Indians placed fourth in their heat, as Monroy — the reigning All-Area Runner of the Year — came in second in 15 minutes 19 seconds. Teammate Charlie Camacho was 17th (16:15), Alex Quispe was 27th (16:31), Brandon Andrade was 45th (16:53) and Alex Martinez was 53rd (17:09) to account for the Burroughs’ scorers. Zach Beimford was 54th (17.13).

The Burroughs girls’ team placed 11th in its heat. Gracia Innocentia (45th; 20:38), Brice Edrington (55th; 20:55), Giovanna Carrasco (57th; 20:57), Kristen Burroughs (66th; 21:24), Ashley Velasco (74th; 21:52), Rita Murphy (77th; 22:02) and Guadalupe Galindo (91st; 22:56) competed for the Indians.

Paul was the lone Bulldogs qualifier, finishing sixth in her heat with a time of 18:12. Led by Paul, the Burbank girls’ team finished sixth.
