Providence’s Gonzalez heats up in tourney

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Providence in 22nd Annual Paul Sutton Tip-Off Classic: Patrick Gonzalez put on an amazing performance in the annual tournament at Providence High.

In a championship semifinal game Friday against St. Genevieve, Gonzalez, a senior, poured in 44 points. The Pioneers set a tournament record with 15 three-pointers in the game.

Teammate Tyler Kidd added 18 points and Chester Bosworth added 11.

Gonzalez and Kidd were named to the all-tournament team.

In the championship game Saturday, the Pioneers fell to Pilibos, 60-57.

Providence (2-2) began the event Thursday with a 94-44 victory against Waverly. Gonzalez led the way with eight three-pointers and 31 points. The eight threes was second-best in school history, behind Harout Messrelian’s 10. Kidd added 25 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Providence in the Viewpoint Tournament: The Pioneers began the event Monday with a 56-47 win against Village Christian.

The Pioneers (2-1) took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Crusaders, 22-9, in the frame.

Ana Solis 19 paced Providence with 19 points. Teammate Rita Khatchadourian chipped in 11 and Christine Salero had 10.

Louisville 48, Providence 41: The Pioneers began their season Dec. 1 with a nonleague loss at home.

Ana Solis scored 15 points and Rita Khatchadourian added 14 for Providence.

Bell-Jeff in the Inglewood City of Champions Tournament: The Guards jumped out to a big lead Saturday and were able to cruise to a 60-47 victory against Sierra Canyon.

Bell-Jeff rolled to a 24-9 lead after the first quarter.

Leslie Lopez-Wood poured in 14 points, including four three-pointers. Teammate Rishonda Napier added 14 points and Clarissa Larios had 10.

Bell-Jeff wasn’t as fortunate in its game Thursday, as it fell to Gardena Serra, 57-54.

Lopez-Wood again led the way with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Napier contributed with 11 points and Arizona-bound Layana White had 10.

Bell-Jeff opened the tournament with a 56-34 win against Redondo Union.

Napier connected on three three-pointers to score15 points. White had 12 points, Kiah Jones had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Jasmine Smith had 10 points and eight rebounds.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Hart 4, Burroughs 1: Burroughs fell in a nonleague match Thursday on the road.

Burroughs 2, South Pasadena 2: Amy Lopez scored both of the Indians’ goals in a nonleague stalemate Dec. 1 at South Pasadena.

Burroughs battled back from a 2-1 deficit in the second half to score the tying goal.

The Indians’ defense of Brooke Hazzard, Riley Garden, Haley White and Ashley Caro played well
