Bulldogs put up good fight

Mission Viejo 41, Burbank 39: The Bulldogs had one of their best efforts of the season in a losing effort Wednesday against the host Diablos in a first-round game of the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs.

Mission Viejo (26-1) came into the game with just one loss on the season, was the No. 2 seed and captured the South Coast League Championship. Burbank (16-12) earned an at-large berth into the playoffs after tying for fourth place in the Pacific League.

The Bulldogs didn’t jump out to a great start, as Mission Viejo took a 13-5 lead after the first quarter. However, the visitors played better in the second quarter, outscoring the Diablos, 14-8, to trail by just two points at halftime, 21-19.

Burbank found itself behind after three quarters, 36-27. However, the Bulldogs made a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. They limited the high-powered Diablos to just five points, outscoring them, 12-5, in the fourth. But the comeback attempt fell short.

Saddleback Valley Christian 80, Providence 65: The Pioneers were outscored in the second half, 42-23, on Wednesday in a CIF Southern Section Division V-A loss on the road.

Saddleback Valley Christian (21-6) is the division’s No. 14 seed and placed second in the San Joaquin League. Providence (13-12) was the No. 4 team from the Liberty League.

The Pioneers led at halftime, 42-38.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Temescal Canyon 20, Burbank 5: The Bulldogs had no answer for the talented Titans in a CIF Southern Section Division V first-round loss Wednesday on the road.

The Titans (23-5) are the No. 2 seed and won the Sunbelt League championship. Burbank (17-9) was the No. 4 team from the Pacific League.

Perris 10, Burroughs 6: The Indians took to the road Tuesday and fell in the CIF Southern Section Division V wild-card match.

Burroughs (8-8) earned an at-larger berth into the postseason. The Panthers (18-12) were an at-large team from the Sunbelt League.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Peninsula 4, Burroughs 0: The season came to an end for the Indians (10-6-4) on Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division II first-round match on the road.

Long Beach Wilson 5, Burbank 0: The Bulldogs (11-6-7) fell Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division II first-round contest on the road against the No. 2 seed.
