All-Area second team soccer

Joan Alvarez, Senior, Forward, Burroughs

The first-team Pacific League pick recorded 11 goals and 14 assists. His play guided the Indians to a 9-3-3 league record, good enough for second place.

David Russell, Sr., Forward, Flint. Prep

All-Prep League first-team selection collected nine goals and seven assists. A versatile player, he also served as a midfielder for a young Rebels’ squad.


Salar Hajimirsadeghi, Junior, Mf., Cres. Valley

All-CIF Southern Section Division III third-team selection collected six goals and eight assists. The Pacific League first-team pick helped the Falcons go 15-3-5 and finish first in league.

Derek Bell, Junior, Midfielder, St. Francis

All-Mission League second-team pick compiled nine assists and two goals for the Knights, who finished second in the Mission League behind Loyola.


Randy Gartside, senior, defender, La Cañada

The Spartans’ defensive stopper finished with one goal and three assists, while cementing a defense that allowed just 18 goals and posted 12 shutouts.

Sean Fitzpatrick, Sr., Defender, St. Francis

The clutch defender for the Knights hauled in first-team All-Mission League honors. He anchored a back line that produced five shutouts and finished second in Mission League.

Matt Schmutzer, Junior, Defender, Cres. Valley

Earned his way on the All-Pacific League first team for playing shut-down defense He anchored a squad that collected eight shutouts and reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Pedro Salinas, Senior, Sweeper, Glendale

The All-Pacific League first-team choice had an impact on both offense and defense for the Nitros. The senior had two goals and four assists, while usually shutting down the opposition’s top goal scorer.


Thomas Banks, Junior, Midfielder, St. Francis

The defensive-minded midfielder and All-Mission League first-team member collected four assists. The Knights went 15-10 (9-3 in league) before losing in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Jeff Quezada, Fresh., Defender, St. Francis

Started on a stacked Knights squad that reached the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals. The All-Mission-League second-team selection contributed to a defense that held opposing teams scoreless five times, including in the second round of the playoffs against No. 4 Ventura.

Paul Dean, Soph.,goalkeeper, St. Francis

Guarded the net for the Knights, taking them to the CIF Division I quarterfinals. He held four teams scoreless, including fourth-seeded Ventura in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.
