Indians fall short of tourney title

Indians can’t claim tournament crown: The Burroughs High girls’ basketball team advanced to the championship game of the College of the Canyons Tournament on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Indians, they lost to Valencia, 43-28.

Davina Del Castillo had six points and five rebounds, Delaney Nicol had six points and Jessie Adams had five points for Burroughs.

In a semifinal tournament game Friday, the Indians defeated West Ranch, 39-27. Kacee Cartee had 11 points and three rebounds, Del Castillo had nine rebounds and three steals and Sidney Ortega had seven points and four rebounds.

Del Castillo had six points and 11 rebounds, Nicol had seven points and three assists, Jakarra Waddell had six points and three steals and Adams added eight points to lift Burroughs to a 39-23 tournament win against Golden Valley.

In a summer-league game, Burroughs defeated Calabasas, 38-33. Del Castillo had 10 points and 10 rebounds Nicol had five points and Paula Galicia added four rebounds.

The Indians weren’t as fortunate against Stockdale of Central California, falling, 48-35. Del Castillo had six points and 11 rebounds, Nicol had seven points and three assists, Waddell had six points and three steals and Adams added eight points.

Burroughs also lost to Village Christian, 32-30. Gabby Pineiro had eight points, Nicol added six and Del Castillo had six steals and six rebounds.

Burroughs baseball suffers loss: Despite some solid pitching, the Indians lost to Quartz Hill, 2-1, in eight innings Friday in a summer-league game.

Starting pitcher Luis Pereya was strong over six innings. Reliever Zane Carey picked up the loss, despite pitching well in the late innings.

Organization to induct latest hall class: The Baseball Reliquary will present the 2011 Induction Day ceremony for its 13th class of electees to the Shrine of the Eternals at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Donald R. Wright Auditorium in the Pasadena Central Library (285 E. Walnut St.).

As seating is limited, all attendees should arrive by 1:30 p.m., when the auditorium doors open. Admission is open to the public and free of charge.

The inductees will be Ted Giannoulas, Pete Gray and Maury Wills. The keynote address will be delivered by Jean Hastings Ardell. In addition, the Baseball Reliquary will honor the recipients of the 2011 Hilda Award (Chris Erskine), and the 2011 Tony Salin Memorial Award (Paul Dickson).

The festivities will commence with an induction-day tradition, the ceremonial bell ringing in honor of the late Brooklyn Dodgers fan Hilda Chester.
