Team does well in prestigious tournament: Burbank resident and recent Sherman Oaks Notre Dame graduate Nils Besvold helped the Santa Monica Beach Club boys’ 18 Black volleyball team win a silver medal at the Junior Nationals in the Open Division last week in Minneapolis.
The team was made up of players from Orange County and the San Fernando Valley, as well as the Thousand Oaks and Ventura areas.
The team went 11-1 in the Junior Nationals, losing in the finals to Balboa Bay Beach Club.
The squad also placed first in the Southern California Volleyball Assn. standings for the 2010-2011 season, besting 66 other teams. SMBC also won both the SCVA boys’ classic tournament in June — with a record of 12-0 — and the SCVA Invitational in January (going 10-0).
Tubert wins another award: The successes from her freshman season with the University of Arkansas women’s golf team continues for Burroughs High graduate Emily Tubert.
Tubert, along with teammates Corinna Rees and Victoria Vela, were selected this week as National Golf Coaches Assn. All-American Scholar recipients.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are among the most stringent of all college athletics, with honorees having to maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 while competing in at least 50 % of the team’s events during the season.
“Academics is truly the cornerstone of what we try to do at Arkansas,” Razorback head Coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said on the team’s website. “We are students first and these three young ladies are great examples of what you can accomplish when you are focused and committed. All three are great representatives both on and off the golf course. I’m very proud of this recognition for their success.”
Tubert recently concluded her freshman season with the Razorbacks, earning both golf and academic All-America honors. She is majoring in kinesiology.
The Razorbacks have always had success in the classroom and this year’s trio brings Arkansas’ total to eight student-athletes honored with 14 selections to this elite team.
The NGCA recognized 566 women’s collegiate golfers from Divisions I, II and III this year. Arkansas’ selections were three of the 25 student-athletes from the Southeastern Conference who were recognized.
Burbank baseball continues successful summer: The Bulldogs notched a victory in the Valley Invitational Baseball League Wednesday by downing Loyola, 12-3.
Burbank (13-8) hammered out 19 hits.
The teams were tied at 3 until the Bulldogs pushed across nine unanswered runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Leading the offensive charge was Dylan Mersola, who was three for four with a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Ian McKinnon was three for four with three runs scored, Paul Frias was two for three with a double, an RBI and a run scored and John White was three for four with two RBI.
On the mound, Daniel Starkand sent the distance, striking out three and walking two.
