Indians take third in league

Burbank, Burroughs in Pacific League finals: The Indians stamped their ticket to the CIF Southern Section playoffs by placing third in the final league competition.

In addition, two Burroughs players qualified for individual postseason play.

At the league finals Thursday at Jurupa Hills Country Club, senior Ravipa Losakul placed fourth and sophomore Joany Gao was fifth, as both qualified for the CIF playoffs.

In the competition, Losakul had a two-day total of 276 and Gao also had a 276. Losakul earned the higher placement in a card-off.

Crescenta Valley’s Jocelyn Chia won the league championship with a two-round score of 259.

Bulldogs’ Irene Maemura finished ninth (287), Jasmine Daniel of Burroughs placed 13th (302), Burbank’s Tess Apinchapong was 15th (308) and teammate Haley Pirruccello was 17th (316) in Thursday’s final.

Burroughs had already locked up the third-place spot in league prior to Tuesday’s fifth league match at Brookside Golf Course No. 2. Arcadia placed first with 29 points and was followed by Crescenta Valley (22), the Indians (19), La Cañada (15.5), San Marino (13.5) and Burbank (five).

Burroughs will take part in the Central Team Divisional Thursday at the same Jurupa Hills Country Club course.

Gao and Losakul will take part in the CIF Southern Section Individual Regionals on Oct. 31 at River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard.

“The two of them made it to the playoffs last season as individuals, so they know what to expect,” Burroughs Coach Greg Everhart said. “They are excited to be going.”

In Tuesday’s event, the best area result came from Maemura, who fired a 41. She was followed by Apinchapong (47) and Pirruccello (51).

For Burroughs, Gao had a 43, Losakul had a 45, Daniel had a 47, Alex Chandler and Tatiana Rizzotti had 54s and Evyn Freedman had a 58.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Bellarmine-Jefferson d. St. Matthias, 25-11, 25-21, 25-20: Jocelyn Cervantes had 14 kills and four aces to pace the Guards to a Santa Cruz League victory Tuesday at home.

Amanda Maalouf had 17 assists for Bell-Jeff (7-6-2, 4-0 in league).

The win keeps the Guards in first place in league.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Crescenta Valley 12, Burbank 6: The highlight for the Bulldogs in Thursday’s Pacific League match was the play of doubles team Meredy Gharabegi and Ashley Basco, which swept, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9), 6-0.

Burbank (8-6, 6-4) also got wins in doubles from Brianne Waller and Dana Gibson, 7-5, 6-2, and Elizabeth Sanchez and Veronica Mendoza, 7-5, (8-6).

YOUTH FOOTBALL

Burbank Vikings: The Junior Black team remained the lone undefeated squad in the local tackle program with a win in Week 6 games Oct. 15.

Junior Black defeated the Santa Clarita Apaches, 44-0, to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Also picking up wins was Senior Black (5-1) against Castaic, 28-8, Junior White (2-4) against Castaic, 38-6, Midget Black (5-1) against Agoura Blue, 36-0, Midget Green (3-3) against Canyon Gold, 58-0, and Bantam Green (5-1) against Santa Clarita Valley Mohawks, 42-6.

In losing efforts, Senior Gold (2-4) fell to Canyon Black, 33-8, Junior Green (1-4) was defeated by Calabasas Silver, 22-12, Bantam Black (2-3) lost to Santa Clarita Valley Seminoles, 16-6, and Pee-Wee White fell to Simi, 30-28.

Pee-Wee Black (3-2) had a bye.
