Pioneers capture tournament

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Providence 48, San Diego Tri-City Christian 25: The Pioneers won the Tri-City Tournament on Thursday, turning back the host team. Providence’s Catherine Saint recorded 16 points and four assists en route to being named the tournament’s most valuable player. Katia Dabbaghian of Providence had 11 rebounds and five steals and was selected to the all-tournament team.

Bea Benedicto collected 11 points and eight rebounds for the Pioneers, who held a 24-12 halftime advantage. Janel Adraneda added five steals for Providence.

“Our defense played well throughout the tournament,” said Providence Coach Andrew Bencze, whose team improved to 12-2.

Adraneda had 10 points Wednesday to lead Providence to a 57-26 win over Rio Hondo Prep in a semifinal game of the Tri-City Tournament. The Pioneers received nine points from Saint and eight from Julie Chambers.

Saint collected nine points Tuesday and Benedicto added seven to propel the Pioneers to a 32-24 win over Fallbrook in a quarterfinal contest of the Tri-City Tournament.

Burroughs 48, Marymount 25: Aysia Shellmire’s 12 points, nine rebounds and six blocks paced the Indians (5-8) in a Gold Bracket consolation game of the West Coast Holiday Festival at Burroughs on Friday.

Burroughs’ April Harris finished with a career-high 15 points, with 13 coming in the first half, and teammate Davina Del Castillo added 10 rebounds and four steals.

In earlier Holiday Festival action, the Indians got 21 points from Shellmire on Thursday in a 59-56 loss to Hawthorne, in which Jakarra Waddell added eight points for Burroughs.

Sidney Ortega and Jessica Adams finished with nine points Wednesday for the Indians in a 68-44 loss to Harvard-Westlake. Waddell contributed six points and six rebounds for Burroughs, which got six points, five rebounds and five blocks from Shellmire.

Harvard-Westlake 50, Burbank 36: Jamie Gonzalez scored eight points and Chelsey Linder added seven points for the Bulldogs (6-7) in a Gold Bracket consolation game of the West Coast Holiday Festival at Burroughs on Friday.

In earlier Holiday Festival action, Damarie Gonzalez finished with 14 points Thursday for the Bulldogs in a 53-45 loss to Pasadena Poly that saw Sharis Ghazeri and Sylvia Granados finish with nine points apiece.

In a 75-53 tournament loss to Valencia on Wednesday, Jamie Gonzalez had 18 points and Damarie Gonzalez added 15 for the Bulldogs.

Bellarmine-Jefferson 56, Vista Murrieta 45: Rishonda Napier had 27 points Thursday for the host Guards in a International Bracket consolation game of the West Coast Holiday Festival.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Providence 83, Golden Valley 48: Marcus LoVett Jr. collected 31 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists Thursday for Providence (11-3) in the consolation championship game of the Chaminade Tournament. Patrick Gonzalez had 23 points for the Pioneers, who got 13 from Christian Ware-Berry.

Bellarmine-Jefferson 63, Antelope Valley 39: The Guards concluded their run in the La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic with a win on Thursday that improved their record to 6-9.
