Players from Burroughs, Burbank win scholar awards: Burbank High football player Mitch Camacho and Adam Velasco from Burroughs were given 2011- 2012 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Awards.

The honors were given out at a black-tie event March 20 at the Sportsmen’s Lodge where more than 50 athletes were honored.

Each year, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame chapters throughout the United States present scholar-athlete awards to high school and college seniors in their respective areas who have exhibited outstanding football performance, team attitude, academic achievements, campus achievements, citizenship and character. One qualifying senior football player from each of the high schools and colleges in the San Fernando, Crescenta, Southwest Antelope, Santa Clarita and Conejo valleys is selected to represent their respective school.

Camacho, who played wide receiver and safety for the Bulldogs, has a 4.4 grade-point average and will be attending either UCLA, the University of California San Diego or the University of California Santa Barbara. An honorable-mention All-Pacific League selection, Camacho won the program’s Bulldog Award for his leadership.

Velasco, a punt returner, kick returner and running back for the Indians, has a 3.92 GPA. He helped Burroughs win a share of the Pacific League championship in 2011.

Host of stars slated for celebrity golf event at Lakeside: There will be plenty of star power at the fifth annual George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic May 7 at Lakeside Golf Club.

Lopez will be joined by celebrity caddies Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), Vanessa Marcil (General Hospital) and celebrity golfers including Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses), Kenny G, Andy Garcia (The Godfather: Part III, The Untouchables), Aimee Garcia (Dexter), Anthony Anderson (Scream 4), Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters), Christopher McDonald (Fanboys), Hill Harper (CSI: New York), Ryan McPartlin (Chuck), Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street), Carmine Giovinazzo (CSI: New York), William Devane (Revenge), Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Richard Schiff (House of Lies), Boris Kodjoe (Resident Evil), Miles Doughty (Slightly Stoopid), along with athletes Barry Bonds, Greg Noll, Laird Hamilton (Athlete) and Gabriella Reece.

The Fifth Annual George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic & Mercedes-Benz Dealer Championship will benefit The Lopez Foundation. The charity’s mission is to create positive, permanent change for underprivileged children, adults and military families confronting challenges in education and health, as well as increasing community awareness about kidney disease and organ donation.

A veteran comedian, television and film actor and talk show host, Lopez is a kidney transplant survivor. In 2005, his wife, Ann, donated one of her kidneys to the entertainer.
