Former Burroughs track and field performers end season with solid results: A group of former Burroughs High athletes finished their respective track and field seasons with some solid performances.

Western Nelson, a junior at Cal State San Marcos, placed 40th in the men’s marathon in 3 hours 6 minutes 19.90 seconds at the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 26 in Marion, Ind.

Nelson, an All-American in cross-country, qualified for the marathon by finishing sixth in 1:11:34 at the Surf City Half-Marathon in Huntington Beach in February.

A junior at Boise State, Taryn Campos did well at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Campos was a member of the women’s 4x100-meter relay team that placed third (46.05), she finished fifth in the 400 (55.79), fifth in the 200 (24.72) and was a member of the 4x400 relay team that placed sixth (3:48.33).

Vivian Ochoa, a junior at Adams State College, took part in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in Gunnison and placed fourth in the women’s 10,000 (41:13).

Shana Emile, a senior at UC San Diego, enjoyed a second-place finish in the women’s hammer throw (160 feet 3) at the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Championships at Cal State Los Angeles.

Mike Ortega, a junior at Cal State Stanislaus and the Indians’ sprint coach the last four years, placed fourth in the men’s pole vault (15-41/2) at the CCAA event at Cal State L.A.

Shannon Kermah, a freshman at Montclair State, participated in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships in Pomona, N.J. Along with being a member of the women’s 4X100 relay team that placed second (48.21), she was third in the long jump (17-41/2) and sixth in the triple jump (35-9).

Personalities to hit the course at Lakeside: The Screen Actors Guild Foundation will host its third annual golf classic, a charity tournament benefiting the Foundation’s Catastrophic Health Fund and Assistance Programs that is hosted by actor Ron Perlman. The event will kick off with a shotgun start at noon June 11 at Lakeside Country Club.

The tournament will be followed by dinner and an awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

The tournament brings together golf enthusiasts from the sports and entertainment communities to raise funds for the foundation, which provides vital support to the acting community in times of need.

Personalities expected to attend include Alan Thicke, Christopher McDonald, Danny Masterson, David Leisure, Dennis Haysbert, Gabriel Aubrey, JoBeth Williams, Joe Mantegna, Joel McHale, Kevin Dobson, Kevin Sorbo, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Michael Ironside, Patrick Warburton, CS Lee, Kevin Nealon, Matt Craven, Ray Romano and Tim Allen.

Racing greats to highlight car show: Drag racing will take center stage when the Burbank Road Kings Car Club celebrates its 60th anniversary during the 23rd annual Picnic in the Park and Charity Car Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 10 at Johnny Carson Park.

Throughout the day, owners will be firing up their nostalgic drag racing top fuel cars.

“It’s an incredible display,” said publicity chairman Don Baldaseroni. “You will see and feel the thunder when the cars light up, one after another.”

Special guests scheduled to attend will be drag racing legends Tommy Ivo and Don Prudhomme and recent NHRA Funny Car winner Jack Beckman.

Gino Gaudio will kick off the festivities at 9:30 a.m. singing the national anthem and a Boy Scout color guard will present the colors. Mayor Dave Golonski will give the official welcome.

Proceeds go to charities such as high school auto shop scholarships, Boys & Girls Club and the Burbank Police and Fire Museum.

Spectators and car entries are free, with donations appreciated. Car placement begins at 7 a.m. Breakfast is served from 7-10:30 with lunch beginning at 10:30.

There will be 800 hot rods, modified racers and factory stock motor cars on display. Trophies will be awarded to the top cars in 15 categories as well as several special awards. Other activities include a 50/50 drawing, silent auction and more than 40 vendors.
