YOUTH FOOTBALL

Burbank Vikings: Three teams from the Burbank Vikings Youth Tackle Football program remained undefeated with wins Saturday in the second week of the season.

Leading the way was the Senior Green (2-0), which dominated in a 52-0 victory against Oxnard. The Midget Green (2-0) also enjoyed a shutout, downing Calabasas Black, 28-0. The Junior Green also improved its record to 2-0 following a 22-6 win against the Highland Bulldogs.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Citrus College 35, Pasadena City College 14: With multiple turnovers and a penalty yardage accrual that nearly halved its own offensive production, not much worked for Pasadena in Saturday’s season opener.

Subsequently, despite a few productive debuts, the Lancers were left with several questions in the wake of a nonconference defeat at Citrus.

“The obvious statistics that killed us were penalties and turnovers,” said Lancers second-year Coach Fred Fimbres, whose teamed committed four turnovers and was penalized 12 times for 153 yards. “Those are the two things that, had we done them better, would have changed the whole complexion of the game.”

The contest slipped away from Pasadena in a third quarter in which it surrendered 14 points and fell behind, 35-14.

After the Lancers opened the third with a three-and-out, Citrus responded with an 11-play, 79-yard drive that spanned 5 minutes and 40 seconds and was capped by a toe-dragging 19-yard touchdown catch from receiver Scott Calles at the 8:00 mark in the ¿third.

Following the score, the Lancers drove 22 yards to their 42, but fumbled their possession away.

Citrus took over at the Pasadena 48 and scored nine plays later on a two-yard plunge from running back Justin Robles that gave the Owls a 35-14 advantage with two minutes left in the third.

While Pasadena reached Citrus’ red zone twice in the fourth, the Lancers were turned away twice on downs at the Owls’ 10 and 13 yard-lines, while Pasadena’s last offensive possession ended with an interception.

“Nothing tastes good in a loss and I hate losing,” said Lancers quarterback Justin Posthuma, who completed 19 of 35 passes for 279 yards and two interceptions. “Every time we’d drive, we’d have penalties that would kill us or turnovers.”

Both the Lancers and Owls scored two touchdowns over the final 4:30 in a first half that Citrus led, 21-14.
