Burbank basketball beats Muir in overtime

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Burbank 53, Muir 51 (overtime): Peter Wongsasitom came off a screen and sank a 15-footer at the buzzer in overtime to lift the Bulldogs to a Pacific League win at home.

It was Wongsasitom’s only points of the game and his basket accounted for the only points of the extra period.

Richard Elmoyan had 16 points to pace Burbank (14-10, 6-6).

Crescenta Valley 73, Burroughs 41: The Indians (13-11, 5-7) fell Friday in the Pacific League game at home.

Muir 65, Burroughs 52: The Indians fell behind, but cut the deficit to just four in the fourth quarter only to fall Wednesday in a Pacific League game.

Lawrence White had 19 points, Chris Hovasapian had 14 and Kalen Verhoeven chipped in 11 for Burroughs .

Glendale 69, Burbank 68: The Bulldogs couldn’t pull out the Pacific League win Wednesday against the Nitros.

Sarkis Karian led Burbank with 24 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Burroughs 56, Crescenta Valley 30: The Indians improved to 22-3, 11-1 in the Pacific League with a win Friday at home.

Aysia Shellmire had 11 points and three blocks and Davina Del Castillo contributed nine points and 11 rebounds.

Burroughs 66, Muir 40: Aysia Shellmire and Sidney Ortega scored 16 points each Wednesday to pace the Indians to a Pacific League victory.

Shellmire also had six rebounds and four blocks, Davina Del Castillo added six rebounds and three steals and Jakarra Waddell contributed seven points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Burbank 55, Muir 35: Lysette Perez had 15 points, on five three-pointers, to help pace the Bulldogs to a Pacific League win at home Friday.

Aja Locke added 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocks for Burbank (14-11, 9-3).

Providence 64, Glendale Adventist Academy 25: The Pioneers had 34 steals en route to a Liberty League victory at home Wednesday night.

“It’s our calling card,” Providence Coach Andrew Bencze said of his team’s defense, “make the other team play fast and not have time to make decisions.”

Bea Benedicto logged a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) for Providence, which also had 10 points and seven steals from Estelle Glorioso, nine points from Fabi Jimenez and seven points and eight steals from Katia Dabbaghian.

“Over the last week and a half to two weeks, we’ve been hitting our stride,” Bencze said. “We’re playing good defense and hopefully peaking in time for the end of league and CIF.”

Bellarmine-Jefferson 49, St. Genevieve 47: Despite being outscored, 14-4, in the first quarter, the Guards battled back and came on in the fourth quarter to win the Santa Cruz League game Tuesday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Providence 3, Trinity Classical Academy 1: The Pioneers notched the Heritage League win Friday at Heritage Park in Valencia.

Sarkis Shaginian scored two goals and Anto Boghokian had one.

Goalie Gevorg Arabyan picked up the win.

Burroughs 1, Muir 0: Jorman Herrera scored the match’s only goal on a second-half penalty kick to pace the Indians to a Pacific League win Wednesday.

Burroughs goalkeeper Elliot Whitecotton recorded his sixth shutout of the year.

Muir 4, Burbank 0: The Bulldogs (3-7-2) fell Friday in a Pacific League match at home.

Glendale 3, Burbank 2: Dennis Palacio and Andre Negrete scored goals Wednesday in the Bulldogs’ Pacific League loss.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 21, Muir 0: The Indians had little trouble notching the Pacific League victory Wednesday.

Burbank 3, Glendale 1: The Bulldogs received goals from Kaitlin Brooks, Maddie Carlborg and Katherine Pimentel in recording Wednesday’s Pacific League victory.
