Boys’ soccer, girls’ basketball teams ready for next round

After leading the Burroughs High boys’ soccer program for 22 years, Coach Mike Kodama stepped down after the 2009 season.

Kodama’s absence from the program lasted just two seasons, as he returned to head the Indians for the 2011-12 campaign. In two seasons, Kodama’s squads have two CIF Southern Section playoff appearances and a Pacific League championship this season.

Kodama has eight league titles to his credit at Burroughs.

Burroughs will be one of three local teams in playoff action Wednesday — one in boys’ soccer and two in girls’ basketball. The Indians will hit the road for a 3:30 p.m. second-round matchup against Redlands East Valley at Redlands Sport Park.

In hoops action, No. 2-seed Providence will host Bishop Union in a 6 p.m. quarterfinal contest in Division V-AA game and Burbank will also have to hit the road for a 7 p.m. second-round Division I-A game against No. 2 Canyon Springs.

The Indians (14-6-3) began the postseason Friday with a 4-2 victory against Anaheim at Memorial Field. Xavi Izqueta had two goals and an assist and Brandon Gerlach had a goal and an assist in the win.

If Burroughs wins Wednesday, it will put itself into the quarterfinals Friday against either Palmdale or Nipomo.

Providence (18-9) has been able to roll through the first two rounds of the playoffs. Along with a 69-44 second-round win Saturday against host Linfield Christian, the Pioneers also defeated Downey Calvary Chapel, 48-20, in their opener Thursday.

Providence is coming off its fourth straight Liberty League championship under Coach Andrew Bencze.

Against Linfield Christian, Providence knocked down 10 three-pointers. Freshman Fabi Jimenez ended the game with 16 points, including five three-pointers. Teammate Estelle Glorioso added 13 points, Janel Adraneda had 12 and Kristie Kawamoto chipped in 10.

A win would put the Pioneers into the semifinals for the second consecutive year and they would face Village Christian or Frazier Mountain on Saturday.

Burbank (16-12) — the third-place team from the Pacific League — will try and extend its season and advance to the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

The Bulldogs had to battle to win their opener Saturday at home against El Toro, 53-41. Courtney Seidler led Burbank with 16 points. Jamie Gonzalez added 11 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

A quarterfinal berth could put Burbank against Foothill or Buena.
