Burroughs softball wins league opener, 2-0

SOFTBALL

Burroughs 2, Arcadia 0: The Indians opened Pacific League play with a shutout win Thursday against the Apaches on the road.

Pitcher Brice Edrington went the distance, giving up four hits and striking out three. One of those strikeouts came in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded.

“Brice pitched the best game of her career,” Burroughs Coach Doug Nicol said. “She just pitched her butt off.”

Burroughs (5-4 overall) received two hits each from Kaitlin Okimoto and Sidney Ortega. Okimoto also drove in a run.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 9, Crescenta Valley 9 (Bulldogs win on games, 64-63): The Bulldogs were able to just squeak by with a Pacific League victory Thursday at home.

No. 1 singles player Clayton Pauff swept his three sets by 6-0 scores to help lift Burbank (2-1 in league).

BASEBALL

Providence 32, Immanuel Christian 2 (five innings): Freshman pitcher Thomas Keller had 10 strikeouts in five innings and the Pioneers improved to 2-1 with a nonleague mercy-rule win Wednesday night at Foy Park.

Keller, Aaron Ziegler and Dante Cano scored five runs each and the Pioneers took advantage of 21 walks and 15 hits. Sean Holt was three for three with a home run and six runs batted in and Ben Jury had five RBI.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Arcadia 120, Burroughs 15: The Indians had two first-place finishers in the Pacific League meet against the visiting Apaches Tuesday at Memorial Field.

Ellaine Llano placed first in the pole vault with an 8-foot effort and Gracia Innocentia finished first in the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes 34 seconds. Burroughs’ Gigi Chamberlain was second in the 800 (2:34), Carissa Jackson was third in the 100 hurdles (18.3) and Ashley Sapone was third in the discus (70-1).

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Arcadia 97, Burroughs 39: Everth Vargas was a double-winner for the Indians in the Pacific League meet Tuesday at Memorial Field.

Vargas won the 800 meters in 2 minutes 11 seconds and the 1,600 in 4:43. Other Burroughs winners were Luis Celaya in the 3,200 (10:13) and Matt Schwartz in the pole vault (13 feet). Schwartz was also second in the long jump (19-51/2) and third in the shot put (39-9).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burbank d. Arcadia, 25-17, 26-24, 25-22: The upstart Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in the Pacific League with a victory Tuesday at home.

Derian Blandon had seven kills, John You added six kills, Ryan Garcia had 19 assists, Mario Hernandez contributed 12 digs and Elijah Cowart added 10 digs for Burbank, which swept its first two league contests.

BOYS’ GOLF

Saugus 445, Burroughs 446: The Indians dropped a close nonleague match against the Centurions Wednesday at De Bell Golf Club.

Sean White paced Burroughs with a 77. Teammate Patrick Colbert carded an 87, Konner Fairman had a 92, Sivakorn Losakul had a 94 and Tnick Trivimol had a 96.
