Burroughs tennis player Garrett Auproux out for the season
BOYS’ TENNIS
Burroughs 12, Burbank 6: The Bulldogs won the Pacific League match Thursday against the rival Bulldogs but had to do so without standout senior singles player Garrett Auproux.
Auproux, the two time defending Pacific League singles champion and two-time reigning All-Area Singles Player of the Year, suffered a broken leg in a junior tournament last weekend.
“It was a pretty bad injury from what I’m told,” Burroughs Coach Roy Bernhardt said. “He broke his tibia and fibula and he had to have surgery that lasted two hours. So, he might be out for at least a year with the injury.”
In the win against Burbank, singles player Sawyer Patterson swept his sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, as did the doubles team of Kevin Hoang and Wen Yao Lin, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Burroughs d. Arcadia, 27-25, 25-10, 25-18: The Indians remained undefeated in the Pacific League with a victory Wednesday at home.
Daniel Jacobs led the way with 11 kills for Burroughs. Shayne Beamer had nine kills and three blocks, Nick Van Loo had six kills, Danny Casilas and Daniel Marbach had nine digs each and BJ Lagmay had 30 assists.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Burroughs 122, Hoover 6: The Indians received two first-place finishes from Jamie Phan in winning the Pacific League meet Thursday at Memorial Field.
Phan won the long jump with a 12 feet 5 1/2 effort and also won the triple jump with a 27-6 mark.
Other individual winners for Burroughs included Nicole Garcia in the 100 meters (13.5 seconds), Kayla Avila in the 200 (29.4), Gigi Chamberlain in the 400 (1:06.2), Dayanna Yanez in the 800 (2:42), Gracia Innocentia in the 1,600 (5:36), Eileen Eckles in the 3,200 (12:20), Carissa Jackson in the 100 hurdles (18.0), Joanna Reyes in the 300 hurdles (52.6), Sara Prystupa in the pole vault (9-0), Arianna Leonardo in the high jump (4-0), Ashley Sapone in the shot put (27-0 1/2) and Olivia Villegas in the discus (73-5).
BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Burroughs 98, Hoover 28: Niko Guerrero, Everth Vargas, Nathan Bradley and Matt Schwartz were all multiple winners for the Indians in Thursday’s Pacific League match at Memorial Field.
While Guerrero took the 100 meters (11.4 seconds), the 200 (23.9) and the long jump (18 feet 3), Vargas was first in the 800 (2:07) and the 1,600 (4:43), Bradley won the 110 hurdles (17.1) and the 300 hurdles (43.0) and Schwartz took the pole vault (13-6) and the high jump (5-7).
Other Burroughs winners included Robert Martinez in the 400 (53.1), Shane Thompson in the 3,200 (9:43.5), Garrett Manoukian in the triple jump (27-5), Brian Jones in the shot put (48-11) and Ermar Cruz in the discus (130-0).
BASEBALL
Providence 6, St. Monica Academy 5: The Pioneers (4-3, 1-1 in league) scored three runs in the bottom of seventh inning Tuesday to pull out a nonleague win at Foy Park.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Mason Inumerable walked and scored on a single by Thomas Keller. Matthew Kuhn followed with a triple to tie the game. After a strikeout and a hit batter, Kuhn scored on a wild pitch.
Keller, a freshman, pitched six strong innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs allowed. Sean Holt pitched the final frame and picked up the victory in relief. Holt also drove in two runs.
“I told the boys after the game to remember this feeling because it will happen again,” Providence Coach Steve Knez said.
