Burroughs, Providence softball move on in playoffs

Burroughs 9, Arroyo Valley 3: The Indians received a three-hit, complete-game effort from pitcher Brice Edrington on Tuesday to earn a CIF Southern Section Division III wild-card win on the road.
“This was just a great effort by our girls and I’m just so proud of them,” said Burroughs Coach Doug Nicol, whose team is the No. 4 seed from the Pacific League.
“We started the game with three runs in the first inning and we never looked back.”
Edrington also did well at the plate, as she was one of four Burroughs (18-8) players to have four hits. The other three were Delaney Nicol, Sidney Ortega and Danielle Ryan.
The win earns the Indians a first-round playoff game at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Colton.
Providence 22, Coastal Christian 18: Despite having to use three pitchers, the Pioneers were able to notch the win Tuesday in a CIF Southern Section Division VII wild-card win on the road.
“We have had pitching problems all season, and we had them in this game as well,” Providence Coach Joel Curtis said. “We have some good hitters, but we have struggled with our pitching and that’s hurt us.”
Fabi Jimenez was finally able to come in and shore things up in the circle for Providence.
The Pioneers (8-12) placed third in the Liberty League. They now move on and will take part in a first-round game at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Firebaugh.
TRACK AND FIELD
Burbank, Burroughs in CIF Division II prelims: The Bulldogs had two boys’ competitors advance to the finals after qualifying out of Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries at Trabuco Hills High.
Andy Hurtado threw 150 feet 2 to finish eighth in the discus and qualify for next Saturday’s finals at Mount San Antonio College.
Joining Hurtado will be Chris Miranda, who cleared a personal best of 14 feet 3 in the pole vault to be among the nine qualifiers moving on.
Despite not qualifying, Burbank’s Dennis Palacio competed in three events, setting a personal best of 20-11 in the long jump and also clocking 16.22 in the 110-meter high hurdles and finishing with a 41.48 in the 300 hurdles. Teammate Arsen Mkrtchyan ran 2:02.4 in the 800, Bernie Corea ran 9:43.71 in the 3,200 and Andres Pulgarin also set a personal best in the pole vault, clearing 13-3. Hurtado also threw 42-3.5 in the shot put.
On the girls’ side, Kayla Martil ran 1:00.24 to finish fourth in her heat of the 400.
For Burroughs, the girls’ competitors were Gracia Innocentia, who was 16th in the 3,200 in 11:27.80, and Sarah Prystupa, who was 17th in the pole vault with a 9-3 mark.
On the boys’ side, the 4x400 relay of Ricky Mendez, Everth Vargas, Robert Martinez and Augusto Corea placed 28th in 3:29.01. In addition, Matt Schwartz was 12th in the pole vault with a 13-9 effort, Brian Jones was 33rd in the pole vault with a 44-6 3/4 effort and Ermar Cruz was 36th in the shot put with a 122-8.
