Burroughs, Burbank baseball fall in the playoffs

Arroyo Grande 6, Burbank 1: The Bulldogs could manage just four hits Friday in losing their CIF Southern Section Division II first-round game on the road.

“They threw a big lefty on us and he did a great job,” said Burbank Coach Bob Hart, whose team ended the season at 18-9 after winning a share of the Pacific League title. “But also I don’t think we were able to do what I think we’re capable of doing on offense. But that happens sometimes.”

The lone Burbank run came in the seventh inning. Harrison Hernandez doubled down the right-field line and was replaced by pinch runner Micah Simon. He scored on a groundout by Ian McKinnon.

Arroyo Grande (19-6-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and tacked on three more in the fourth.

“It was a long trip up there, but at the end of the day you’ve got to go out and play the game,” Hart said.

Los Osos 8, Burroughs 2: The Indians had trouble stringing together hits Friday in dropping their CIF Southern Section Division II first-round game on the road.

“They had a big left-hander that was 6[-foot-]3 and threw in the 90s,” said Burroughs Coach Kiel Holmes, whose squad finished the season 17-12. “He is headed to Oklahoma if he doesn’t decide to go with the team he gets drafted by. I had to shake his hand at the end of the game. …He did a very good job.”

Burroughs actually took a lead against Los Osos (21-5) in the first inning, 1-0. Myles Haddad tripled and scored on a groundout by Brian Pozos.

But the Grizzles came back to score five runs in their half of the first inning.

The Indians added a run in the fourth.

“From top to bottom, from their No. 1 to No. 9 hitters, they were just better than our pitchers,” Holmes said.
