Burbank 10-11 All-Stars win District 16 tournament
GLENDALE—A big first inning lifted the Burbank 10-11 All Stars to the District 16 championship over the Jewel City/Jewish War Veterans-Foothill 10-11 All Stars, completing a two-game sweep in the two-team tournament.
Burbank scored eight in the first en route to a 13-2 title-clinching victory on Sunday evening at the Scholl Canyon Ball Fields. The win came one day after Burbank defeated the Glendale squad in the first of the best-of-three series, 17-1, on Saturday.
Burbank needed just five hits to score the 13 runs, as it capitalized on seven walks and five errors from the JC/JWV-Foothill defense.
Ashley London’s triple scored Amaya Broyls and Lillyanna Travieso to put Burbank on the scoreboard. Alex Davis, Hana Savola, Sidnie Dabbadie picked up RBIs for the three subsequent runs. Burbank sent 12 batters to the plate in the deciding first inning.
“We have great chemistry and the girls are really clicking,” Burbank All-Stars Coach Kim Dabbadie said. “Each girl plays one to three positions, so they complement each other really well.”
On the flipside, Glendale managed just two hits off Burbank starting pitcher Sidnie Dabbadie and reliever Travieso. Manny Gil’s squad did get on the scoreboard first, though, taking advantage of a dropped ball in left field.
The lead would be short-lived, as Glendale relinquished 11 unanswered runs before Rory Xander’s grounder scored Clarice Gil to cut the Burbank lead to 11-2. Sidnie Dabbadie’s fifth strikeout ended the inning and the rally with runners on second and third.
“They are a very, very good team,” Manny Gil said. “They are solid on defense, absolutely solid. We made some mistakes that we couldn’t recover from.”
Four players recorded a hit for Burbank, with Olivia Oberlander putting together a multi-hit game.
Burbank will begin the Section 2 Tournament on Saturday.
Burbank will be without Shannon Walsh, who suffered a broken leg in the first inning of Saturday’s win, after sliding into home.
“We battled together and dedicated this to her,” Kim Dabbadie said.
