Sports roundup: Indians boys’ cross-country team places first in invitational

Burroughs in Branco Invitational: The Indians boys’ team had a fine showing in the event Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona, as the varsity squad raced to a first-place finish with 93 points.

The Indians were paced by Shane Thompson, who placed first in 14 minutes, 56 seconds. He was followed by Ricky Mendez (third; 15:05), Garrett Boulais (fourth; 15:06), Elias Hoxsie (sixth; 15:26), Everth Vargas (seventh; 15:33) and Jack Howe (eighth; 15:35).

The Burroughs girls placed 13th with 122 points. Scorers were Valerie Monroy (54th; 20:09), Dayanna Yanez (56th; 20:11), Jaymie Olea (77th; 21:13), Brianna Maya (83rd; 21:31) and Laura Rodriguez (84th; 21:31).

The junior varsity boys’ squad also enjoyed a first-place finish with 81 points. Thomas Switzer won the race in 16:11. He was followed by Dion Mokhtari (third; 16:50), Greg Kern (fourth; 17:21), Carvin Ortega (seventh; 17:30) and Jared Perez (14th; 18:06).

On the boys’ sophomore-freshmen level, Burroughs placed first with 125 points behind a second-place finish by Manne Green in 16:08.

Other scorers were Adam Villalpando (third; 16:08), Justin Villagran (sixth; 16:45), Ben Mathov (seventh; 16:48) and Timothy Wells (eighth; 16:52).

In the girls’ junior varsity race, Burroughs finished ninth with 171 points. Scorers were Eileen Eckles (fifth; 19:50), Rainy Diforte (47th; 22:43), Maddy Davis (49th; 22:49), Cathy Enciso (70th; 23:33) and Melissa Cova (77th; 23:42).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Armenian General Benevolent Union d. Providence, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22: The Pioneers suffered their first loss of the season by dropping the home nonleague match Tuesday.

The Pioneers (1-1) were paced by junior middle Olivia Menke, who led the team with eight kills. Coming off the bench, junior outside hitter Julianne Tolentino added seven kills. Junior setter Jenny Nardoni finished with 24 assists and sophomore libero Nikka Adraneda collected 21 digs.

FOOTBALL

Burbank Vikings: Four teams from the local tackle football program were able to notch victories Saturday in second-week games.

Leading the way was Midget Green (2-0), which earned a 35-6 win against the Santa Clarita Redskins. Also getting wins were Junior Green (2-0), which defeated Camarillo, 42-18, Bantam Black (1-1), which outlasted Oxnard, 6-2, and the Pee-Wees (2-0), who turned back West Valley, 22-8.

On the losing end was Senior Black (1-1) against Lancaster,14-12, Senior Green (1-1) against Moorpark, 42-6, and Junior Black (1-1) against Valley West, 31-6. Midget Black (1-1-0) also lost against Camarillo, 34-28, as did Bantam White (1-1) against Palmdale, 22-0, and the Gremlins (0-2-0) against Canyon, 26-0.
