Roundup: Bell-Jeff volleyball spikes past Mary Star

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Bellarmine-Jefferson d. Mary Star of the Sea, 25-21, 21-25, 25-13, 26-24: Amanda Maalof had 26 assists and five aces Tuesday in helping lift the Guards to a nonleague victory against the Stars.

Briana Hillo had 10 kills and 19 digs, Liz Fundora added 12 kills and 19 digs and Sam Caserez had nine kills and 13 digs for Bell-Jeff.

GIRLS GOLF

West Ranch 227, Burbank 279: The Bulldogs fell Monday in a nonleague match at Vista Valencia Golf Course.

The Bulldogs were paced by Caitlyn McGrath, who carded a 50. Burbank received 52s Kaitlin Brooks and Alexis Poche. The team had to take a 66 for the fifth scorer.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs in Rosemead Invitational: Three Indians teams placed first in the event Saturday in grade-level races.

The junior varsity boys finished first with 251 points behind Shane Thompson (third; 15:14), Elias Hoxsie (ninth; 15:34), Garrett Boulais (10th; 15:38), Jack Howe (22nd; 16:13) and Dion Mokhtari (44th; 16:49).

Also placing first were the sophomore boys (251) behind Manne Green (eighth; 6:30), Adam Villalpando (10th; 16:33), Justin Villagran (15th; 16:43), Matt Cardenas (24th; 17:06) and Christian Fuentes (28th; 17:11), and the freshman boys (271) behind Timothy Wells (sixth; 16:50), Matt Ordonez (seventh; 17:10), Jacob Morales (14th; 17:36), Johnny Muhlenkamp (20th; 17:50) and Jaustin Dorris (24th; 17:55).

In the senior girls’ race, Burroughs had just two runners, Dayanna Yanez (30th; 20:21) and Brianna Maya (41st; 20:55).

The senior boys (257) placed seventh and the team’s scorers were Ricky Mendez (ninth; 15:30), Thomas Switzer (44th; 16:10), Everth Vargas (56th; 16:22), Chris Van Dam (69th; 16:32) and Nick Garduno (71st; 16:37).

The junior girls ran to a second-place showing (191), with Valerie Monroy (ninth; 19:40), Miranda Acosta (22nd; 20:42), Jaymie Olea (35th; 21:20), Laura Rodriguez (42nd; 21:32) and Deanna Fierro (44th; 21:34) leading the way.

The sophomore girls’ team had three runners in Eileen Eckles (11th; 20:02), Betsy Ramirez (42nd; 21:49) and Maddy Davis (44th; 21:49).

In the freshman girls’ race, Burroughs was fourth (158), getting scoring efforts from Heidi Eligio (third; 20:51), Rainy Diforte (21st; 22:30), Gizelle Godinez (37th; 23:11). Jailene Diaz (56th; 24:09) and Melissa Cova (59th; 24:22).

Burbank in Fastback Shootout: The Bulldogs had some good marks in Saturday’s competition at Mount San Antonio College.

Running on a two-mile course in grade-level races, the Burbank boys finished ninth out of 37 teams and the girls were 11th out of 44 teams in the merged results.

The boys were led by senior Ethan Moskowitz (10 minutes, 24 seconds), sophomore Adam Navar (10:39), junior Enrique Vizcaino (10:42), senior Gabriel Ellman (10:45) and freshmen Sam Gorman (11:03).

The girls were led by sophomore Candela Fernandez (12:00), seniors Arlette Movsesyan (12:41) and Daisy Ignacio (13:00), sophomore Caroline Adams (13:25), and senior Taryn Stevenson (13:44).

FOOTBALL

Burbank Vikings: Three teams from the local tackle program remained undefeated with wins Saturday in week three games.

Leading the way was Junior Green (3-0), which downed West Valley, 42-0. Also staying perfect was Midget Green (3-0), which defeated West Valley, 36-24, and the Pee-Wees (3-0), which beat (3-0-0) Lancaster, 16-14.

Also picking up wins were Junior Black (2-1), which downed the Santa Clarita Aztecs, 42-24, the Midget Black (2-1), which got by Moorpark, 26-12, and Bantam White (2-1), which earned a win against the Santa Clarita Apaches, 26-22.

Suffering losses were the Senior Black (1-2), which fell to Valley, 32-0, Senior Green (0-2), which lost to West Valley, 34-26, and Bantam Black (1-2), which was shut out by West Valley, 2-0.
