Roundup: Burroughs baseball gets the best of Lancaster
BASEBALL
Burroughs 5, Lancaster 0: Indians’ pitcher Cole Meyer struck out seven Tuesday to pace host Burroughs to a win at home for its first victory of the season.
Burroughs (1-3) scored all five of its runs in the sixth inning and tallied five runs on the day.
Noah Haddad, Anthony Bocanegra, Cameron Rodriguez, Roy Hirota and Kevin Navarro had hits for the Indians.
Calabasas 8, Burroughs 5: The Indians started the season 0-3 with a nonleague loss Saturday on the road.
The Indians tied the score at 3 in the top half of the fourth inning but couldn’t surge in front.
Max Haddad was two for four with a run scored and a run driven in, Aidan Anding was two for four and Brennan Brown had a hit and two RBI for Burroughs.
Hart 10, Burbank 7: The Bulldogs fell to the host Indians on Saturday in the Easton Tournament.
Burbank had a 7-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning before Hart tallied five runs in its half of the fifth and tacked on five more in the sixth.
SOFTBALL
Bellarmine-Jefferson 10, Faith Baptist 3: The Guards improved to 3-0 on the season with a nonleague victory Tuesday at Gross Park.
Pitcher Mia Acosta (3-0) got the win, striking out 11. She was also two for four with two runs batted in. Sam Casarez was three for four with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI and Tiffany Galindo was two for four with two runs scored.
Burbank in Hart Tournament: The Bulldogs began their season Friday, earning an 8-4 win over Thousand Oaks before suffering a 6-1 loss to Canyon Country Canyon.
In the win against Thousand Oaks, Burbank had 11 hits. Lily Winn was two for four with one run scored and one run driven in, Julia Duarte was also two for four with one run scored and two RBI. Isabele Frias and Cailey Stevenson also drove in runs for the Bulldogs (1-10).
Kaitlin Brooks got the win in the circle, striking out eight.
The Bulldogs fell behind, 1-0, in the bottom of the first before rallying for three runs in the third for a lead they would not relinquish.
Burroughs in Simi Valley Tournament: The Indians began the event Saturday with a 9-2 loss against Buena before coming back to notch a 9-0 win against La Reina.
In the opener, Burroughs (1-1), which was missing key players, committed five errors and gave up six unearned runs.
The team could muster just two hits, a triple by Michelle Santiago and a single by sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto.
Against La Reina, sophomore Dani Ryan pitched a two-hit shutout while striking out six.
Senior second baseman Aimee Rodriguez had a third-inning triple that scored two runs.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Glendale 12, Burbank 6: The Bulldogs slipped to 1-3 overall and in the Pacific League with the loss Tuesday at home.
Singles players Kevin Orellana and Reed Bruner both won two sets each.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Heritage Christian d. Providence, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23: The Pioneers saw their record dip to 2-3 with the nonleague loss Tuesday on the road.
Providence in Providence Tournament: After dropping their first two matches of the event Friday, the Pioneers rallied to earn a 25-22, 25-20 win Saturday against cross-town rival Bellarmine-Jefferson in the consolation round.
Bellarmine-Jefferson in Providence Tournament: The Guards lost in a consolation round game to crosstown rival Providence, 25-22, 25-20, on Saturday at Providence.
In matches Friday, Bell-Jeff lost to Campbell Hall, 25-21, 25-14 and to Pasadena Poly, 25-18, 26-24.
Burroughs in Redondo Union Tournament: The Indians played well in the tournament Friday and Saturday at Redondo Union High, placing fifth out of 32 teams, which included some of the top schools in Southern California.
Burroughs’ Tristan Martin was named to the all-tournament team.
In pool play, Burroughs — ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division II — defeated Peninsula, 27-29, 25-22, 15-8, got by Van Nuys, 25-12, 25-9, and fell in a close one to Orange Lutheran 26-24, 24-26, 20-18.
In the Gold Bracket playoffs, the Indians got by Long Beach Poly (ranked No. 10 Division II), 14-25, 25-23, 15-4, lost to Esperanza, (No.2 in Division II), 26-24, 25-23, 15-13, and downed Cathedral (No. 1 in Division IV), 25-16, 25-18.
TRACK AND FIELD
Burroughs in Burbank Relays: The Indians ruled the pole vault in Saturday’s competition at Memorial Field.
On the boys’ side, Matt Schwartz won the pole vault with a 14-foot effort. On the girls’ side, Sarah Prystupa captured the event with an 8-6 mark.
The Indian boys’ distance medley relay team of Ricky Mendez, Robert Martinez, Everth Vargas and Shane Thompson placed first in 10 minutes 39 seconds and the girls’ 4x800-meter team of Sara Ehlers, Dayanna Yanez, Bailey Harrison and Brianna Maya also finished first in 10:51.
