Roundup: Burbank softball wins tourney title

Burbank in High Desert Classic: With one swing, Bulldogs sophomore Julia Duarte plated two runs, led the Bulldogs to a 5-4 win in nine innings over West Ranch and bestowed her team with the High Desert Classic tournament championship Saturday.

Duarte hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel Burbank to the tournament title in Lancaster.

Burbank earned passage into the title game on the heels of a 1-0 nine-inning semifinal win against Highland in which junior Caitlyn Brooks, the reigning All-Area Softball Player of the Year, threw a shutout and struck out 16. Amber Ingram scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Brooks was named the tournament most valuable player, while Duarte, junior Jazmin Orozco and junior Bridgette Pisa garnered spots on the all-tournament team.

The Bulldogs, who had lost to West Ranch earlier in the tournament, are now 5-3.

Burroughs in Simi Valley Tournament: The Indians fell to Righetti, 1-0, on Saturday in the tournament’s consolation championship game.

The Indians (4-2) played well against defending CIF Southern Section Division III champions. Burroughs yielded the winning run in the seventh inning.

Sidney Ortega went three for three and Michelle Santiago and Aimee Rodriguez had the other two hits for Burroughs. Cheyenne Steward pitched a solid game, giving up one earned run and just four hits for Burroughs.

Burroughs faced Pacific League foe Arcadia in its opening game in the tournament Saturday, turning back the Apaches, 9-6. Burroughs scored eight runs in the top of the first inning to jump ahead early.

Steward hit a grand slam and Rodriguez and Santiago also hit home runs. Dani Ryan got the win in the circle, improving to 3-0. Steward pitched the final inning for the save.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burbank in San Gabriel Tournament: The Bulldogs played well in the tournament Friday and Saturday, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Joseph Servin was selected to the all-tournament team, as the Bulldogs improved to 8-1

In the semifinal contest Saturday, the Bulldogs lost to Pacific League foe Crescenta Valley, 26-17, 25-23.

In the quarterfinals, Burbank defeated host San Gabriel, 26-24, 22-25, 16-14. Servin had 12 kills, Justin Saisirikul had 11 digs and Peter Jang had 16 assists for the Bulldogs.

In the first round of the Gold Division playoffs, Burbank defeated West Torrance, 25-18, 25-20. Servin had eight kills and nine digs, Willie Perryman had six kills and Jang had 12 assists.

In pool-play games Friday, the Bulldogs defeated El Camino, 25-20, 25-22, Montebello, 16-25, 25-23, 15-4, and Garey, 24-26, 25-19, 15-11.

BOYS’ GOLF
