Roundup: Burroughs boys’ tennis gets by rival Burbank

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burroughs 12, Burbank 6: The Indians received sweeps from two of their doubles teams to win the Pacific League match Tuesday against the host Bulldogs.

The Burroughs team of Peter Vu and John Hoang won, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1, and the duo of Alex Park and Steven Campbell posted 6-1, 7-5, 6-3 victories.

“I was really surprised by the way our doubles played,” said Burroughs Coach Roy Bernhardt, whose team improved to 3-4, 2-4 in league. “I thought Burbank would have some tough doubles.”

Indians No. 1 singles Sawyer Patterson, the defending league champion, kept his season record perfect by sweeping his three sets by 6-0 scores.

The Bulldogs fell to 1-5 in league.

SOFTBALL

Burbank 8, Arcadia 1: Pitcher Caitlyn Brooks struck out 16 and didn’t walk a batter in leading the Bulldogs to a win Tuesday in their Pacific League opener on the road.

Brooks, the reigning All-Area Player of the Year, had a no-hitter going for 6 2/3 innings. She ended up with a two-hitter.

Julia Duarte had a three-run home run, Lily Winn was three for four with three runs batted in, Bridgette Pisa was two for four and Brooks was two for three with two RBI for Burbank (6-3).

Providence 28, New Community Jewish 0 (five innings): The Pioneers made the most of nine hits to record the nonleague mercy-rule win Tuesday at Olive Park.

Providence (4-1) scored all the runs it would need after pushing across 11 in the first inning. The Pioneers also tallied 16 runs in the third inning.

The Pioneers took advantage of 21 walks. Veronica Abuyog was three for seven with a home run, four runs scored and six runs batted in.

Pitchers Sierra Nelson and Fabi Jimenez combined for a one-hitter. Nelson had five strikeouts in three innings and Jimenez had three strikeouts in two innings.

BASEBALL

St. Monica Academy 4, Providence 3: The Pioneers slipped to 5-3 with the nonleague loss Tuesday at Foy Park.

BOYS’ GOLF

Burroughs 199, Pasadena 280: The Indians easily won the nonleague match Tuesday at De Bell Golf Club.

Burroughs was paced by Louis D’Aquila, who fired an even-par 36. He was followed by Tnick Trivimol with a 39, Calvin Guntetong and Daniel Kesicbasian with 41s and John Gonzalez with a 42.

New Community 339, Providence 348: The Pioneers fell Tuesday in the Liberty League match at De Bell Golf Club.

TRACK AND FIELD

Burroughs in Mt. Carmel (San Diego) Invitational: Boys’ varsity pole vaulter Matt Schwartz had a fine showing in the event Saturday.

Schwartz placed second in the Division I event with an effort of 14 feet, 8 inches. Schwartz continues to cement himself as one of the finest pole vaulters in school history, as he is now tied for the No. 3 spot (with Steve Morris, 1967) on the all-time list. He trails only Jon Switzer (15-7, 1976) and Esa Sallinen (16-4 3/4, 1994).

Also for the Indians, Andrew Williams was second in the boys’ Division II triple jump (41-4 1/2), Corwin Scherer was second in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles (41.42 seconds) and was followed closely by teammate Nathan Bradley, who was third in the event (42.43). Scherer was also second in his heat of the 100 hurdles (15.46) and Bradley was third in his 100 hurdles heat (15.90). Robert Martinez was third in his heat of the 400 (50.76).
