Though it was closer than perhaps either side envisioned, the Glendale High boys’ tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak by holding off visiting Burroughs, 10-8, in Pacific League action Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re happy to get back to winning,” Glendale Coach Grace Sheldon-Williams said, “and I’m happy to see the guys end the streak. Burroughs gave us a great match and we just got it. It was a nice win.”

The first time the Nitros (4-8, 4-6 in league) took on the Indians (1-9 in league) in Burbank on March 9, Glendale came away with a much easier 12-6 victory.

This time around, Burroughs delivered an inspired effort and nearly nabbed the upset as the Indians finished 5-4 in singles play.Jo

Glendale clinched the victory thanks to its doubles. The unit finished 6-3, as its top two pairs went unbeaten.

That’s not to say that there weren’t challenges.

The Nitros’ No. 1 doubles squad of Joseph Louie and Nathan Ongyiu survived three straight battles.

Perhaps the match of the day was between competing No. 1s as Louis and Ongyiu volleyed the lead back and forth with the Indians’ pair of Cameron Flowers and Luc Thom. The Glendale twosome eventually held on for a thrilling 7-6 (7-4) win.

Louie and Ongyiu also held off challenges from Burroughs’ No. 2 duo of Kiet Hoang and Sebastian Muga (7-5) and the Indians No. 3 squad of Daniel Cho and Mark Do (6-4).

Glendale’s No. 2 pair of Jon Fong and Justin Byron also turned in three victories, with their closest triumph a 6-4 victory over Hoang and Muga. Fong and Byron also picked up wins of 6-2 and 6-1.

On the singles front, Burroughs junior Kendric Marcy was unstoppable, as the Indians’ top player swept in the most dominant fashion possible, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

Burroughs’ No. 2 singles player Troy Buffone-Scoift notched a pair of victories, 6-1, 7-5, while dropping a 6-4 battle to Pranav Law, Glendale’s top singles player.

Law finished 2-1, while Glendale’s Richard Mirzoian and Zain Tokatly each added a victory in singles play.

“This was one of our better matches this year,” Burroughs Coach Roy Bernhardt said. “It was close and we had a chance to win.”
