Sports Roundup: Burbank High’s Sa’Dullah has another monster game

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Burbank 56, Brentwood 45: Backed by another big effort from Yazzy Sa’dullah on Tuesday, Burbank earned a spot in the West Coast Holiday Festival Silver Division championship contest.

Sa’Dullah finished with 28 points, including 20 in the second half, and 10 rebounds to spark Burbank to a victory against Brentwood, which won the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A title last season.

“Instead of being flustered at halftime, we went out and played defense, boxed out and made some free throws,’ said Bulldogs Coach Bruce Breeden, whose team trailed, 28-19, at the intermission. “For us right now, we are on a little win streak and we are excited about being in the finals.

Burbank (8-5) play in the title contest at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Burroughs.

The Bulldogs outscored Brentwood, 26-6, in the third quarter to take a 45-34 lead.

Tuesday saw Burbank defeat Leuzinger, 75-45, with Sa’Dullah turning in a spectacular 36 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and six steals. She had five three-pointers and was 13 of 14 from the line. Tsybaeva scored 17 points with Ani Temurian turning in 12.

Burbank received 13 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks from Ana Tsybaeva and 11 from Christina Mkrtchyan.

Sa’Dullah had 19 points and Tsybaeva had 11 in the Bulldogs’ 63-46 tournament win on Saturday.

Providence 42, Holy Martyrs 27: The Pioneers picked up two victories in the Tri-City Christian Tournament in San Diego on Tuesday, with the victory over Holy Martyrs coming in the semifinal game.

Katia Dabbahgian led the way for Providence (9-3) with 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Rachel Camonayan added nine points and nine rebounds.

With the victory, Providence advanced to the tournament championship game Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

Previous to the semifinal victory, the Pioneers topped Rio Hondo Prep in the quarterfinals, 57-49, behind 26 points, five steals and four assists from Dabbahgian.

On Monday, the Pioneer opened with a 57-25 win against Sage Hill.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Bellarmine-Jefferson 56, Renaissance Academy 53: The Guards captured the SoCal Christmas Classic consolation bracket championship with a victory on Tuesday afternoon at Rio Hondo Prep.

With the victory, Bell-Jeff improved to 9-1. The Guards earned advancement to the finals with a 62-43 win over St. Bernard on Monday.

Bell-Jeff got 16 points from Raffy Verano, 14 from Isaac Etter, 12 from Clark Thomas and 10 from Abid Oses in the win Monday.

The Guards earlier beat Chatsworth, 75-44, on Saturday.

Burroughs 54, Temescal Canyon 53: Chris Hovasepian had 17 points and earned all-tournament honors Tuesday in the Tustin-Estancia Tournament consolation final. David Schwer and Jacob Davis added 12 points each for Burroughs (8-4).

Thanks to 24 points from Schwer, Burroughs beat Long Beach Cabrillo, 60-58, on Monday. Steven Hubbell had 14 points and six assists, while Angelo Solis notched 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Indians got 14 points from Hubbell and 10 from Eric Allen in a 71-48 win over Santa Ana Calvary Chapel on Saturday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Maranatha 1, Burroughs 0: A squad that was missing seven starters to injuries and vacations stuggled in dropping all four matches of the two-day-long tournament, which ended Tuesday.

Burroughs lost to Maranatha, 1-0, in the tournament seventh-place match that came after a 2-0 defeat to Oxnard on Tuesday morning.

Previously, Burroughs (0-7-1) lost contests to Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Royal on Monday.
