The Albertsons store on Verdugo Avenue in Burbank is expected to be purchased by the newest grocery chain in the region — Haggen Food & Pharmacy, a relatively small Pacific Northwest chain that announced last month it had agreed to buy more than 140 grocery stores.
The pilot killed in a small plane crash at a Van Nuys intersection Friday afternoon was a longtime scientist at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who specialized in designing robotics for exploring the surfaces of other planets.
A close vote by the Burbank City Council last month approving a retail-and-residential development project proposed for downtown Burbank swung the other way this week, leading to a 3-2 rejection of the proposal on second reading of the ordinance.
