Bicycle event to encourage registration

Share

A free bicycle registration event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the Chandler Bikeway, at Chandler Boulevard and Keystone Street.

Karel Castro, a community resource officer with the Burbank Police Department, is coordinating the registration, and he reminds residents that with the increased popularity of transportation-related bicycle riding in the city comes an increased risk of bicycle thefts.

Castro said that recording bicycle serial numbers into a local database will give police an increased chance of reuniting bike riders with their bicycles if they’re stolen.

Also at the event, Walk Bike Burbank, the local nonprofit chapter of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, will be on hand with bicycle mechanics providing free safety inspections, repairs and minor adjustments to bicycles — including fixing flats and topping off tires with proper air pressure — for free.

Along with the bike registrations and safety checks, there will be raffles, discount coupons from local bike stores and manufacturers and “bike skills” workshops.
