Football previews: Burroughs vs. CV; Burbank vs. Pasadena; Bell-Jeff vs. Malibu
BURROUGHS VS. CRESCENTA VALLEY
WHEN: 7 p.m. Thursday.
WHERE: Moyse Field (Glendale High).
RECORDS: The Indians are 1-4, 1-1 in the Pacific League; the Falcons are 3-2, 1-1.
LAST WEEK: Burroughs defeated Glendale, 24-7; Crescenta Valley defeated Pasadena, 17-14.
OUTLOOK: The Indians, the three-time defending Pacific League champions, will be facing a Crescenta Valley team that is coming off a big league win last week against Pasadena. The Falcons’ defense played a big part in the win, holding the Bulldogs to one touchdown through almost the entire game until the Bulldogs scored their second TD with seven seconds left. Falcons starting quarterback, Ben Rees, who didn’t play last week, is expected to be back for this game. Burroughs has been getting solid production from running backs Garrett Manoukian and Israel Montes. However, the Indians have had their problems passing the ball.
SOMETHING INTERESTING: The teams are close when it comes to surrendering points, as the Falcons give up 23.8 points a game and the Indians give up 25.8.
BURBANK VS. PASADENA
WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday.
WHERE: Pasadena High.
RECORDS: Burbank is 3-2, 2-0 in the Pacific League; Pasadena is 1-4, 1-1.
LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Arcadia, 41-20; Pasadena lost to Crescenta Valley, 17-14.
OUTLOOK: Burbank worked its running game to perfection in the big victory against Arcadia last week. Burbank tallied 425 yards on the ground, with two running backs — James Williams (182 yards) and Teddy Arlington (155) — gaining more than 150 yards each. Burbank is trying to gain a playoff spot in league after failing to qualify for the CIF Southern Section postseason last season. Pasadena has been playing without its star quarterback, senior Brandon Cox, who broke a bone in his foot during the second week of the season. Cox has committed to the University of Arizona. In his place, Pasadena has been going with sophomore Caleb Devine at quarterback.
SOMETHING INTERESTING: Burbank and Muir (2-3, 2-0) are only two teams that are undefeated in league.
BELL-JEFF VS. MALIBU
WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday.
WHERE: Malibu High.
RECORDS: The Guards are 2-3; the Sharks are 3-2.
LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff defeated Pasadena Poly, 50-49; Malibu defeated Webb, 28-7.
OUTLOOK: Senior Josh Martinez has been a workhorse for the Guards this season. The running has gained 788 yards in 105 carries and has eight rushing touchdowns. The Guards also have a solid quarterback in sophomore Johnathan Porter. Porter has thrown for 907 yards, completing 51 of 93 passes for six touchdowns and two interceptions. Coming into the nonleague game, Bell-Jeff will have to deal with a Malibu team that likes to throw the ball. Junior quarterback Chase Gardella has completed 79 of 142 passes for 1,355 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, he has also thrown eight interceptions.
SOMETHING INTERESTING: Bell-Jeff has scored 50 or more points in three of its five games this season.
