After turning in outstanding efforts throughout the season, Burbank High’s Caitlyn Brooks and Burroughs’ Presley Miraglia received All-CIF Southern Section Division III first-team honors after the CIF office unveiled the first-team selections for all seven divisions Monday.
Brooks, a senior pitcher at Burbank, earned the accolade after recently being named the Pacific League Player of the Year. Miraglia, a freshman pitcher, had a fine season for the Indians and earned all-league first-team honors.
While proving their value to their teams, they also caught the attention of other coaches across the division.
The University of Notre Dame-bound Brooks, a right-hander and the reigning All-Area Softball Player of the Year, led the Bulldogs (21-5, 13-1 in league) to a share of their third straight league championship. Brooks finished 18-5 with a sizzling 0.66 earned-run average, 264 strikeouts and 18 walks spanning 149 1/3 innings. Opponents batted .172 against Brooks, who ended her run with 82 wins and 1,002 strikeouts.
Brooks batted .451 (32 for 71) with 26 runs batted in, five doubles, three triples, six home runs and an .859 slugging percentage.
“When you get All-CIF, it’s all about validation,” Burbank second-year Coach Mike Delaney said. “She’s one of the most dominant pitchers in the area over the last four years.
“Everything she’s earned is well-deserved, both with pitching and hitting.
“You are fortunate when you can coach somebody of her talent.”
Miraglia, a right-hander, proved she could handle a significant workload for Burroughs. The Indians finished 23-5, 13-1 to split the league championship with their crosstown rival.
Miraglia went 20-4 record and posted a 1.99 ERA, striking out 119 and walking 25 in 151 innings. She batted .400 (34 for 85) with 25 RBI, 12 runs, eight doubles and three home runs.
“She proved she could be the workhorse for our team and she did a great job,” Burroughs Coach Doug Nicol said. “Not many freshmen get an honor like that, so it doesn’t get much better.
“She was an excellent pitcher who played on a good and experienced team. Presley got better as the year went on. She grew as a person and as a pitcher.”
