Hoag doctor honored by donation agency

Dr. Rosemary O’Meeghan, a critical-care physician at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, received the 2014 Life Bridge Award from OneLegacy, an organ, eye and tissue donation agency, on Tuesday at OneLegacy’s annual symposium in Pomona, where Hoag also received recognition for its organ donation and transplantation efforts.

According to a Hoag news release, O’Meeghan is chairwoman of the Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Council and was the driving force for the creation of the Hoag Tree of Life and Book of Life, which honors donors and their families.

Local resident receives award

The MacPherson family, including Corona del Mar resident James MacPherson, was given the Dream Maker Award at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana’s annual “Be Great Gala” on Oct. 11 at the Newport Beach Marriott.

The club said the family was integral in the club’s recent renovation, as well as the new Joe MacPherson Center for Opportunity and the Garage Teen Center, among other efforts.

The gala, which included dinner and live and silent auctions, raised $200,000 for the club.

Newport group gets award

Newport Beach-based women’s auxiliary Angelitos de Oro received the Impact Award at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County’s first Change a Life Luncheon last month.

Angelitos de Oro has donated more than $5 million to Big Brothers Big Sisters since 1961. The auxiliary’s sole purpose is to raise funds for the nonprofit organization’s “High School Bigs” program, in which volunteer high school students mentor elementary and middle school students.

Newport Beach author and children’s advocate Rhonda Sciortino presented the keynote address during the luncheon at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.

Make-A-Wish gala raises $240,000

More than 300 people gathered Oct. 17 at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach for auctions, dinner and dancing to support Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire at the third annual Evening of Wishes Gala.

The gala raised more than $240,000, with all proceeds going toward fulfilling wishes of children in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties who have life-threatening medical conditions.

The event featured live and silent auction items, including trips to Hawaii and Colorado, along with a drawing for a $5,000 shopping spree at Black, Starr & Frost.

Lions service project

On Saturday, the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club will be at TeWinkle Middle School in Costa Mesa to install lights on 50 bicycles. The project begins at 4 p.m. at the school, 3224 California St.

Balboa Bay Club hosts fundraiser

The Orange County Ronald McDonald House will present its 25th annual High Tea and Fashion Show fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach.

Ronald McDonald House provides a place to stay for families of hospitalized children.

Friday’s event also will feature a silent auction and a drawing, plus a VIP cocktail reception from 4 to 7 p.m.

Tickets to the tea and fashion show are $200. Admission to the reception is $75.

Hurley, Fender display art guitars up for auction

Costa Mesa-based surf-apparel company Hurley and guitar maker Fender are auctioning 20 one-of-a-kind guitars to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Stratocaster and to raise money for charity.

Each guitar has been painted by an artist. The public can see them from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at Hurley’s campus at 1945 Placentia Ave.

The instruments are being auctioned online through Nov. 1, with all proceeds going to Waves for Water, an organization that distributes portable water filters in countries without access to clean water.

Charity walk to travel around Balboa Island

A walk around Balboa Island on Sunday will raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Sign-ins start at 8:15 a.m. and the approximately three-mile walk begins at 9:30 at the Bayside Center at Bayside Drive and Jamboree Road. The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt and breakfast of bagels, muffins, coffee and juice.

Organizer Joanne Milo of Corona del Mar will sell copies of her books, “Healthcare Organizer – All About You for the Savvy Patient” and “The Savvy Diabetic: A Survival Guide.”

All proceeds will benefit the foundation, Milo said.
