Bob Hope Airport moves to promote parking rates

Airport officials have said the growing popularity of ride-hailing apps has caused falling parking revenues, but they have also spent the past year working toward improving the airport’s parking offerings after learning about similar efforts by the Dublin Airport Authority in Ireland.

While Bob Hope Airport officials are seeking to shore up declining parking revenue through stronger enforcement of rules that require car services such as Uber and Lyft to pay $3 per pick-up, some officials also discussed plans to promote low-cost parking options as an advantage of flying out of Burbank.

On Monday, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority board’s operations committee heard the first part of a lengthy presentation about the airport’s parking program. Dan Feger, the airport’s executive director, said the good news, according to a recent analysis, is that its rates are among the cheapest at all airports in the Los Angeles Basin.

“It’s one of the things that we want to start promoting,” Feger said. “It’s another reason to use [Bob Hope Airport].”

The Burbank airport’s cheapest daily rate is $2 less than a similar option at Los Angeles International Airport, according to a presentation by Mary Tromp, the authority’s new parking manager — a position created last year.

Compared to five other airports in Southern California — LAX, Ontario, John Wayne, Long Beach and San Diego International — only Ontario offers a cheaper on-airport parking option at $9 per day compared to $10 daily at Burbank’s Economy Lot A, according to the presentation.

Its daily valet rate of $23 is also the cheapest among local airports offering valet parking — the rate in Long Beach is $24, at John Wayne is $30 and at San Diego is $38.

“It’s the Burbank advantage,” Feger said, using a phrase officials have been using to highlight the airport’s benefits to both travelers and commercial airlines.
