A man who was killed in a crash on the 5 Freeway in Mission Viejo last week has been identified as a Costa Mesa resident.

John Meyer was driving a 2013 Piaggio motor scooter in heavy traffic on the freeway when a 2006 Dodge rear-ended him and another vehicle just before 6 p.m. March 2, authorities said. Three other vehicles were hit in a chain reaction.

Meyer was thrown off his scooter and onto the freeway, injuring his head, neck, chest and legs, authorities said.

Meyer, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene. He would have turned 65 on Monday, according to a coroner’s report.

The California Highway Patrol said the Laguna Niguel man who was driving the Dodge was visibly distraught and was offered trauma intervention before being taken to a hospital. He was not intoxicated, authorities said.

Four other drivers involved in the crash were not injured.
