Rollover crash briefly closes Newport Beach intersection

Newport Beach police briefly shut down a busy intersection and a 73 Toll Road offramp Monday afternoon when a two-vehicle crash caused an SUV to flip over, according to authorities.

A Mercedes-Benz SUV headed south on Birch Street and a GMC Denali headed west on Bristol Street North collided at the two streets’ intersection at around 12:30 p.m., police said.

The crash caused the Mercedes to overturn, but the driver, who was the sole occupant, was unhurt, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

The GMC’s driver complained of some pain but did not need immediate medical attention, Manzella said.

While clearing the scene, crews briefly closed an offramp from the northbound 73 Toll Road that empties onto Bristol just before the intersection.

Police did not immediately know what caused the crash, Manzella said.
