Irvine foundation donates nearly $140k to schools

The Irvine Public Schools Foundation has awarded nearly $140,000 among 31 teachers and counselors across 15 different schools in the Irvine Unified School District.

The teachers and counselors were given the grants at the foundation’s 2016 Innovative Teaching and Counseling awards March 24.

Funding for the grants came from corporate support, foundation support and the foundation’s Parents Appreciating Teachers and Staff Program.

Persian New Year celebration to be held in Irvine

The William R. Mason Regional Park in Irvine will host the Sizdah Bedar on Sunday, an outdoor celebration on the 13th day of Persian New Year.

Due to the thousands of attendees the event typically attracts, the Irvine Police Department predicts that surrounding roadways of the park will experience significant traffic congestion. The park at 18712 University Drive may affect Culver Drive, between Campus Drive and the 405 Freeway, and Harvard Avenue, between Culver Drive and Michelson Drive.

Police suggest using alternative routes when in the affected area from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Parking at the park is $15. University High School, 4771 Campus Drive, will provide limited parking for $15. After 11 a.m., United Methodist Church, 18422 Culver Drive, will provide spots at $20.

Bridal show to take place at Newport Dunes

Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina in Newport Beach will host a bridal show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in its Newport Dunes Gazebo.

Attendees will be able to meet wedding professionals. Vendors at the event will include florists, bakeries, photographers and DJs.

Spots in OCC spring courses still open

Courses for Orange Coast College’s second half of the spring semester still have seats available. The classes include biology, computer information systems, welding and marine science.

There are currently 30 class sections with open seats, according to a news release.

The full class schedule is available at orangecoastcollege.edu. Registration is open until Sunday.

The second half of spring semester begins Monday.

Concordia to host human trafficking awareness event

Concordia University’s “Eyes to See: Daring to Care about Human Trafficking in Southern California” event aims to help people recognize the signs of human trafficking in their communities.

The event, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16 at the Irvine university, will feature speeches and Q&A panels from organizations such as the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force and Run 2 Rescue.

Concordia is at 1530 Concordia West.

The event is free and open to the public.

Newport Banning Land Trust hosts event in Fairview Park

Newport Banning Land Trust will co-host an event for the Costa Mesa’s parks and recreation department from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 16.

The event, titled Teens Give Back, invites seventh- through 12th-graders to create a native demonstration garden at Fairview Park, 2525 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa.

Irvine pizza restaurant to celebrate one-year anniversary

Pizza 90 at 5365 Alton Parkway in Irvine will celebrate its one-year anniversary April 16.

The restaurant will offer an all-day happy hour and half-off pizza.

Live entertainment will take place from 4:30 to 8 p.m. A raffle for free pizza for a year will take place at 8 p.m.

Housing foundation opens poster and essay contest to students

The Fair Housing Foundation invites fourth- through eighth-graders to participate in its Fair Housing Poster Contest, and ninth- through 12th-graders for its Fair Housing Essay Contest.

This year’s contest theme is “Diversity Creates Better Neighborhoods.”

Prizes include an Android tablet, and a $50 and $25 Target gift card.

Posters must be received by 5 p.m. April 16 at the Fair Housing Foundation’s Long Beach office, 3605 Long Beach Blvd., to be considered.

Community Run will raise funds for Costa Mesa schools

The ninth annual Costa Mesa Community Run will be held April 23, with 5k and 10k runs starting at 8:30 a.m. and a superhero fun run at 9:30 a.m.

Proceeds benefit Costa Mesa schools.

Throughout the past eight years, the run has raised nearly $125,000 for Costa Mesa campuses.

Runners will start at Jim Scott Stadium, go through Fairview Park and end at the back at the stadium.

Hoag donors honored at gala that raises $1.1 million

After their donation to Newport Beach-based Hoag Hospital Foundation to support the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center in Newport Beach, Laguna Hills residents Lauri and Steve Delson were honored at the JDRF Orange County chapter’s 20th anniversary Platinum Dream Gala on March 19, which raised more than $1.1 million for diabetes research.

“We are so thrilled to have honored Lauri and Steve Delson,” Cathy Sleva, executive director of JDRF’s Orange County chapter, said in a statement. “Our mission to better treat, prevent and eventually cure [Type 1 diabetes] would not be possible without the continued support of the 500 devoted event attendees.”

The gala, held at the Ritz-Carlton in Dana Point, had 500 sponsors, organization supporters and leaders in attendance.
